48" range hood (ducted)

Looking for 48" range hood that is efficient (> 600 CFM) while relatively quiet. Most seem to be rated as "noisy". Is it true that you can insert a fan silencer in all ducted units?

When the blower used with a hood is remote from the hood, whether in-line in the duct path or outdoors on roof or wall, and there is enough length and diameter to fit it, then a silencer can be added that will remove almost all blade tip turbulence noise generated by the blower. Such silencers look like truck mufflers and are available from Fantech. Baffle noise, duct noise on the hood side of the silencer, and any flow transition induced noises are not affected, but these tend to not dominate the noise as the blade tip turbulence does.

So whenever feasible, use remote blowers with large hoods needing high flow rates to achieve the needed air velocity at the baffles.

If your hood is, say four feet by two feet in entry area, then I recommend 8 sq. ft. x 90 ft./s = 720 CFM actual flow, which will require a 1000 - 1200 CFM rated blower. You will also need a make-up air system.

Hello All - I recently purchased a new 48" GE Monogram Wall Hood off of craigslist. What I am looking for is a 12" duct cover for this model, part # ZX12DC48WSS. GE no longer makes this hood and can't supply the duct cover. Anyone has any experience with GE Monogram hoods? Would a later model duct cover fit mine? Any ideas? If you recommend custom cover built by a local metal fabrication shop, please recommend one around Chicagoland. Thanks!

I have your same problem but have no option to enlarge the vent duct due to the size of the space between the wall and ceiling studs. My previous vent hood was a 36" Cavaliere 900 cfm for a 36" Dacor Epicure cooktop. My new range is 36" DCS with 6 burners. Because I wanted a more substantial look, and after much searching and debating, I bought an AirPro 860 cfm (link below) The Cavaliere hood was more than what I needed for the 36" Dacor. I never turned it up past 1 or 2 while cooking. On 6, the highest speed, it was kinda loud but since I never used it on high it wasn't a problem. The AirPro has not been installed yet so I don't know what the actual noise level will be but it's rated at 35 / 0.7 to 67 / 6.5 (Lowest to Highest Speed). I just couldn't see paying thousands of dollars for a vent hood especially since my $400 Cavaliere had worked fine for 5 years. During my hood research one of the retailers did tell me there was a vent outlet adapter available online but because our contractor wasn't thrilled with that idea, I stayed with the 6" hood duct. ^^^^ that! Ductless range hoods are usually installed where there is NO WAY to put in real ducted hood. They are definitely inferior for removing the heat, humidity and odors from a kitchen.
