Going from ducted to non-ducted range hood/can the duct remain?

The old microwave/range hood has been removed and a short piece of the old duct goes out the ceiling. When I install the new ductless range hood can the old duct be cut off at the ceiling then cover the hole (like when a wood stove is removed and the hole is covered up), rather than have to do a patch job on the roof from duct removal? Can you see any problems that might arise from this? Thanks for your help.

I can't answer your question, but why would you choose to use a non-ducted range hood, especially when you have ducting already there? "Recirculating" hoods are pretty useless.

Ductless range hoods are usually installed where there is NO WAY to put in real ducted hood. They are definitely inferior for removing the heat, humidity and odors from a kitchen.

Moving air through a pipe doesn't really car if if it (the Pipe) is going up, down or sideways. Sure up is always better because you gain the natural rising of heated air, but plenty of setups flow down. Where do you think the air in ALL downdraft hoods and JennAir's flows??? Re: remote vs. internal- either type will work AS LONG AS the selected unit pushes/pulls enough air (cfm's) to overcome the static pressure of your pipe and all the bends. Remote or inline ones are generally quieter than hood mounted ones.

I have pretty much what you described (living room on the other side of the wall and all). I thought we should be able to go straight up but the bathroom upstairs didn't line up the way the thought it would. We had a huge drop down light box over the island so we lifted the screens and cut a hole in the ceiling to verify the direction and spacing of the joists -- confirming what we'd guessed by looking and tapping. Our joists were 12" -- so 11-something and we were able to put a 10 inch duct through.

We recently bought a house with an ADU and are getting ready to rent it. The range hood in the kitchen is both ducted and ductless. For some reason, the installer (or previous owner/tenant?) installed the range hood so that it both ducts to the outdoors as well as back into the unit. Trying to understand how to convert this to the ducted-only configuration. Can I just block the holes to the ductless part? Is it more complicated than that? Looked at the manual quickly and didn't seen an obvious fix (or set-up to reverse). Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

What is the other duct dimension? What kind of (possibly tortuous) path does it follow to get to the blower? How long is the path? What is the blower interface? If you are thinking of replacing the hood, then you might have to have one adapted to this interface instead of to a typical (and preferred) circular duct.
