Converting a duct-less range hood to ducted

I have a standard Broan 30 inch ductless range hood. There is already a vent stack in the cabinet, the last owners just covered it up with the new ductless hood. I want to replace it with a new ducted vent hood and make use of the exhaust vent already in place.
I'm a fabricator and I'm considering just converting the ductless hood to a ducted hood. I'm going to cut a hole in the top to mate to the duct cover the return vent in the front. Looking at vented hoods, I don't see alot of difference besides the front vent and hole. Is there any reason I can't/shoudn't do this?
