Is my OTR microwave too high?
Comments (22)Kennywood - just to be clear, my hood is a 9" tall plain one, not "a big fancy focal point statement hood" as you put it. I still prefer it 100x over my previous OTR MW. Also, the countertop MW I bought instead of the OTR cost about $110, and has all the bells and whistles. The OTR MW I got rid of was $650. So, from an economic point of view, if you get a reasonably priced hood, it is not that much more of a cost than an OTR MW, though it is somewhat more costly. I realize the big advantage of the OTR is space savings, and I understand that there often is no other place for a MW than OTR. But there are disadvantages to the OTR MW, such as the height, the poor exhaust, and the noise, so that if there is space elsewhere, I would recommend the MW go elsewhere....See MoreIs my microwave to high over the range?
Comments (8)My MW is 18.5" over the range, which I find quite comfortable. At 21.5", I think you're a bit high, but probably not so much that it will be an issue unless you're on the short side. My mom (about 5'2" at that time) had a MW that was in the neighborhood of 26" above the range. I was always afraid she was going to drop the oatmeal on her head! Fortunately, she fried it by putting in a foil tin, so we replaced it with an on-counter model. If I were you, I'd stand in front of that MW and place and remove the kinds of containers that you usually put in a MW. If it seems too high, now is the time to get them to lower it. You'll probably have to order a bit of filler and wait for it to come in, but that will be much better than always wishing you'd done it when you had the chance. Maybe you have a bit of filler left from somewhere else in the kitchen?...See MoreOTR Microwave distance over range question
Comments (6)Typically the OTR manufacturer has that the upper cabinet that the OTR attaches to must be 30 inches above the range top. Most OTR's are 15-17 inches tall so that puts the bottom of the OTR between 13 and 15 inches away from the cooking surface. This puts the bottom of the microwave interior floor somewhere around 4.5 feet from the kitchen floor or about armpit to shoulder high for the average height person. When you start getting higher than shoulder high it becomes more dangerous for the person removing hot food from the m/w....See MoreRange hood mounted too high? Slap me in the face, please.
Comments (38)The fundamental issue is that fan/blower flow rates are measured in open air. The result is the zero static pressure flow rate. In a hood with filter, shape transitions, duct losses, and make-up air pressure losses, the actual flow rate is likely to be in the 200 - 300 CFM region. An 18-inch x 30-inch hood has an entry area of 3.75 square feet. At 90 CFM/sq.ft., the actual flow rate called for is ~ 340 CFM, requiring a motor rated at 500 CFM or higher, depending on myriad factors. And even if this is achieved, if the cooking plume is not entirely captured due to a smaller than needed hood aperture, there will still be grease, moisture, and odor escaping into the room....See Moredecoenthusiaste
