Paint Design Dilemma Kitchens

Cabinet paint color and placement of glass cabinet door?

Planning a mini kitchen makeover to include painting the cabinets and adding a glass door to an upper cabinet. Early thoughts are Benjamin Moore Cloud White paint, new brushed nickle hardware, and adding a glass door to an upper cabinet. Budget does not allow for new cabinets or changing backsplash. Thoughts on paint color or placement of glass door? Small kitchen as you can see so putting all glass doors in is not an option due to limited storage space.

counters and splash best bang for the buck. could likely use a lighting plan includes under cab/ceiling too. 12 running feet of counter? look for light material and light backsplash to coordinate. Leave the fine wood as is. save if need to for great new counters. One glass door wont make that much difference. the cabinet doors on the wall look proportional so that is not any sort of issue .....leave them w new hardware. The space is screaming out [new counters.] !!!

I have to agree. I would leave it alone, until you can replace the counters and backsplash. Right now, it all looks good together. Paint the cabinets, and it wont. I would not add a glass cabinet. You dont have a cabinet there, that would would look just right, to keep them looking good. If you are insistant on a glass cabinet it would have to be the corner cabinet next to the sink, but, I still do not think it would look all that great. I do agree, you need better lighting, and probably better light bulbs in your existing fixtures, at least. Led daylight type 3500, would lighten the entire room up and improve it a lot. You could even go to daylight type 4000, but, that will make it even brighter, and may be more than what you are wanting. Try both, and live with them for a couple of days, and then make that decision. I use led 4000 everywhere, and it is my favorite lighting.

Since you're going to be painting the cabinets, you might think about just replacing all the doors. Get the ones in the style you want with glass, then the rest to match with solid center panels. You could then pick a style that will have the proper edge configuration for handles. A local cabinet maker should be able to do this for you. Or check around online. There are several companies that only make cabinet doors. My BIL built his own cabinets, but bought the doors. It may or may not be within your budget, but doesn't hurt to ask and check out what's available. We're in the middle of doing this now. We had the cabinet frames stripped down and bought new doors. They should be finished next week. We decided not to have any glass doors, but they were available from the door company if we wanted to have them. Since you're painting your cabinets, you don't have to worry about the finish matching.

If you do go with paint, make it a panel that can be removed if you change your mind down the road. No need to paint directly on the backs of the cab. Have you considered tin or copper for inside the cab? The tin would match well with your hardware and the copper is close to the color you want to paint. I agree about trying a few darker pieces in the cab before doing anything. It is looking very white because the contents are light as well. If you had some dark glass pieces to coordinate with the bs, that may be the punch that is needed.

For heavens sake. Just shorten the cabinets over the sink, and make them ALL glass doors No solid doors) on that sink side. Uppers are only good for glasses and dishes anyway. Be neat. You don't need to recess them, just shorten over the sink. Yes it's done all the time. Nobody has gone to ER for the concussion that has not happened. If they are all same glass front? You won't be counting the inches in width left, right center whatever. Or............... use a 33 inch sink base, 18 inch Bosch DW, and have 9 inches to your symmetry issue added left db and upper cabinet. And I'd still do all glass doors, and shorten those over the 33 sink base. The 6 inch loss of DW sizing ? No big deal. Most folks hardly notice. Hand wash the bulky pans. And a 33 inch sink base will take a very decent single bowl sink.

The idea of changing your french door to a single is something to consider. To keep cost down you will want to avoid moving appliances, but that range needs to either move farther down the counter from the sink, or over to the center of fridge wall - moving the fridge to the end of the sink counter. That is what I have and I like it very much, but your eating area is right there and in your case the fridge might protrude out into the flow of traffic. You can do a counter depth fridge and encase it so it doesn't look bad from the side. If you move the range down, you will need to change the french door for sure as you really want 4 - 5 ft between range and sink and get the dishwasher next to the sink. A corner sink is not ideal and I would not do that. I am not really seeing enough room for a stovetop / wall oven layout. I would like to do that too - just no where to put the wall oven. Don't even worry about backsplash till the counters are in. It is perfectly acceptable to not have a tile backsplash at all and do as you have now if you prefer. I have white appliances (very ordinary ones) but I have stained wood cabinetry. Is there a reason you want painted cabinets? Warm wood is returning to style and would look pretty with raised panel doors.

Paint can definitely go a long way when it comes to inexpensive but impactful upgrades to a space. Your black countertop is quite pretty, but matching the paint color to your backsplash might be difficult. If this is a temporary solution and you plan to do a more complete renovation in the future, you can either live with the backsplash that may not work with your new cabinet paint color or try painting the backsplash. Painting the backsplash is definitely not a long-term solution, but can last for a few years without being an eyesore.

A white kitchen is a classic option you won’t regret, and Cloud White by Benjamin Moore is a solid choice. We have a few otherideas for white paint for kitchen cabinets, as well as some of our favorite countertops for white cabinets.
