New build - would like any ideas on Kitchen layout
Comments (59)celtic - below are pictures of fridge placements that helped me try to figure out what different ones would look like. I have to say I do not like that fridge B and C stick out as far as they do. Fridge D gives me an idea from a side view at how far it could stick out (just the doors). I like the design of A. Is that the style you are referring to that is $$$. Seems most fridges are enclosed by cabinetry. Probably standard. Layout D was the layout that kind of inspired my kitchen somewhat. They have the fridge and oven side by side and when seen together it actually looks nice. Another option if there is space is just to move the oven down some so that there is usable counter space in between the two. I like all of the new layouts. Each one as youve said has something that you might dislike about it. #3 probably is the best one because of the sight lines, however, I have to agree with Lisa_a in that I like the #3 because of the sight lines, but like the separation of the oven and fridge in 2. I have to admit too that I agree with rhome and that is I liked the pantry location better in the first one because Id like to use that other space as a message center, however, it looks like I gain a lot more cabinet space back in the kitchen when putting the pantry by the sink. These now are just compromises Ill have to make. One of the OP said that having the fridge near the pantry will make it easier to put groceries away, plus where the fridge is at now (new plans) is directly down the hall from the two bedrooms if kids were playing in there. DH is home now so hopefully tomorrow morning we can digest all of this and come to a decision. I guess bottom line is that leaving our kitchen as is on our current plan will create no problems getting around the island because I have lots of space, correct? However, the functionality of the layout isnt ideal (pantry outside of kitchen, no real place for guest to sit on the outside perimeter of the kitchen or is there?). I think the pantry was the only real eyesore there, correct? I watched something on HGTV tonight and the couple wanted to find a home without an island in the kitchen because in her previous house it just got in her familys way. All this talk about islands whats everyone elses view? Love it or hate it? I find that without it I may have too much extra wasted space in the middle. Couple of things I want to make sure I address looks like youre adding a slight wall in the dining room area. Is that just preference because it will look better, or what is the reason for that? I do like that by changing the kitchen I get a private MB entrance and a new shallow storage area. Not sure what Ill use that for yet, but you can never have enough storage space. Would have been the perfect size for a message center, just wrong location. The new MB entrance is that going into old hallway space with closet straight ahead? Can that MB closet be extended and hallway reduced? Vanity storage by MB sink should be a problem. That space should open up and be usable once I reduce down the shower size. Now can you recommend someone who can redraw this out on my plan with dimensions? Thanks to all as always for all your help. Ill give you an update after I talk to DH. Comments (22)Yes - those are not oak and possibly not even solid wood - they may have a veneer so don't sand too hard. The Zinsser products actually say no sanding is necessary, and I did not on my laundry room cabinets as there was very little gloss to start with. The primers do need time to cure - you can still paint over them, but handle the doors carefully for about a week. Do remove the doors and all hardware before painting. Sometimes the drawer fronts are removable from the drawer box. Have a good area to paint. Cabinet Coat is the top coat I believe - the Zinsser is the primer. Zinser 123 is latex so water clean up. The BIN is I think mineral spirits clean up. It is great for really glossy surfaces, but you may be able to get away with the 123 for easier clean up. I've been perfectly happy with the 123. I have not used the Cabinet Coat. I use a latex acrylic enamel recommended by my local paint store. Get brushes that are appropriate for the paint. I recommend that you take a cabinet door or drawer down to your local reputable paint store and have them help you gather the products. They may have different top coats - most of the name brand paints now have a cabinet paint. If it is a good brand, it should do fine....See MoreBeen reading on the kitchen forum
Comments (80)I'm following this thread because I am also trying to figure out how to put in a new kitchen. However, I wanted to tell you that our house had the laundry in the garage. I was horrified when we looked at this house 7 yrs ago. We loved the house, but I hated the idea of doing laundry in a garage. I came up with an idea and hired a contractor to take about 12 ft from the garage, and make a laundry room which is now off my kitchen. It has a door to the laundry and is next to the door to the garage. Our garage was deep and didn't impact parking our cars inside. There was a step down to the garage, but the contractor had cement poured and raised the new laundry to the same level as the interior of the house. The length of the new laundry room is about 20 ft. I had him put in some old cabinets and counters found in the garage. I am thrilled! I have this large space to do my wash, counters to fold laundry and plenty of room to store all my mops, buckets and my cleaning stuff. The space is on the other side of a bathroom so the plumbing was easily accessible. I put in a small slop sink. I think it cost me about $10,000. It was money well spent. It is off my kitchen but since it has a door, can't be seen from the kitchen. I do live in Florida so cold weather did not play into my decision. The thought of clean socks, shirts, etc. falling onto a dirty garage floor made it the first priority when we bought this house. Look again at moving your laundry room inside the house. It is money well spent. Jane...See MoreI would like some paint color ideas for kitchen
Comments (9)margaret here again. They first did a light blue but didn’t like it and then repainted with a medium blue. They went with white subway tile with I think gray grout. The classic subway tile Like 2 by 6 the long rectangular tile. I thought it looked really nice and going with a little darker blue looked better with their black granite countertops. It was a nice area to spend time in. I hope that helps. My daughter does not remember the blue and they moved out of town about 6 months ago. Just go get some blues sample colors to hang on the wall. the blue wasn’t a blue green That much I know. The first one almost looked baby blue if I remember. I liked the blue so much I’m painting my kitchen walls blue too that much I know but still deciding on cabinet color. i think I’m redoing my cabinets tuxedo style. Just retired and bought a home and instead of replacing my cabinets I’m going to travel. Lol. cabinets lights I had below my cabinet in my condo I liked a lot. My daughter and son in law put in cam lights but they just gave me a migraine....See MoreKathsgrdn
