How to get rid of floor-to-ceiling tiles in kitchen

We’re planning a kitchen reno and I’m looking for suggestions on the best way to address the plastic floor-to-ceiling tile that’s been slapped up everywhere.

The house was built in 1945 and has plaster walls. These tiles seem like a later addition and cover every bit of wall in the kitchen. The tiles were originally a turquoise blue colour, but had been painted over by the previous owners.

I pulled up a test section the other day and the tiles came off really easily, but the glue underneath was another story. I don’t know what this stuff is made of but it’s still kind of soft after decades on the wall and it smells awful — like, extremely chemically and it hasn’t gone away in more than a week.

So I have two questions:

  1. What might this glue be and does it pose a health danger?

  2. If I remove the tiles, will I also have to remove the glue before skim-coating the walls? (I’m not looking to cover them with drywall because we need every inch of space we have.)
