Boring bathroom needs help
This is our “powder room” on the main floor. It’s really boring and needs an upgrade. Floors are being replaced with Evoke Surge laminate in the color Lauren next month, so I’m in a position to change everything about it. Walls are Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige. My design style is laidback, almost “Japandi” (I guess?) with pops of dark blue, teal, maybe a little dark green, and various shades of grey. Help!

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoOk, I had to look up what Japandi is and may not totally have the aesthetic down. But here are a few items that might combine to be what you are looking for. It's fun learning about a new style and I can see the attraction to Japandi.
Floating sink in wood could bring in the Scandi look. You'd have to see what wood looks best with your flooring. Use black faucet and black for other fixtures in the room including lighting.

On the walls I like the idea of grasscloth to bring in a natural element. I'd prefer a neutral, natural color so the black fixtures can pop off it. In this case I'd use a black mirror too. If you use a greyish or blueish grasscloth you could hang a natural wood colored mirror like above to contrast the walls.

Put a simple piece of artwork above the toilet that has a lot of negative space and brings in some of the colors that you like.

Comments (17)You are going to want more than 32" for the toilet. 36" is standard (and perhaps even code in some areas???? Not here in Maine but I heard people saying that on other forums...) We have 34" and it feels fine but I dont think I'd want to go much tighter. You could solve that simply by flipping the closet and shower. So, have your shower -rotated 90 degrees and witha glass end wall- at the end of the tub (which is a nice setup you can see in many bathrooms, the tub deck can actually protrude under the shower glass wall and be a ledge or seat in the shower). Then the passageway moves to the left, and you can steal a bit of space from the other closet for the toilet. Either that of have a shorter vanity. 48" isn't a size I'd fight for. It's too short for a double vanity, really (unless you're using one of the new two-faucet 'trough" styles) so why not go down to 42" and have a better toilet area? For resale, though, you should consider a double vanity. Some people I guess expert truly huge ones, like at least 5+' long. But you CAN get smaller ones, Ikea has some great ones for tight spaces. I am heading out now to find porcelain marble look tiles for the shower walls to pick up the gray as you suggested. I want a shiny finish to the walls. Tell me if you think that's a misstep. I am avoiding marble as I have a marble topped vanity now that is pock marked with etchings. As far as seeing myself in the vanity, yes, I think I will be able to do so. I was planning on a black framed mirror spanning the vanity. My current vanity is 32 1/4" high (as will be the new vanity) and when seated on my vanity stool my reflection is seen up to my chest. The only issue currently is that my knees are pressed against drawers. I failed to mention that I was thinking of using absolute black granite for the vanity top for two reasons: one being cost and the other being to avoid etching. Will doing so deviate too much from my inspiration? Comments (13)I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. 2 years agoThis is a digital rendering of what the floor will look like. Trim will be white (I am painting it while floor is being installed). Also this is my current lighting situation 🤢
I’ve toyed with the idea of getting rid of the towel ring and just using paper towels, but I don’t have a place to put a nice tray to hold them.
