Bathroom Style: No More Boring Flooring!
Remake Your Bath With Some High Design Underfoot
Is your bathroom floor giving you cold feet? It may be because it's not quite living up to its design potential. Flooring can be a more tedious project to replace compared to installing a new vanity or swapping your shower curtain for glass, so it can be easy to ignore. But the right flooring will completely change the look of your bathroom, and likely prove a great investment come resell time. If you’re in the market for a potential re-do, walk through a few of these ideas; these chic options will surely warm up your design.
Frame the tiles. Just like a picture in a frame, tile will come to life with borders. Choose a different material for the frame than the tile to give it added dimension.
Frame the vanity. Put your vanity on a pedestal by creating a designated space for it through the design of your tiles. Tricks like these help draw the eye toward statement pieces.
Create a tile area rug. Instead of going wall-to-wall, consider concentrating the tile in a smaller space. Border it with a contrasting material (in this case, marble) for extra visual stimulus.

Checker it up. Black and white checkered floors are a common go-to, but the bathroom is a space to have a little fun. Try alternating stained wooden squares; it’s un unexpected touch that will surely warm the space.
Match the walls. Create a completely fluid look for your bathroom by using the same finish on both floors and walls. You might think it will look too matchy-matchy, but when done right, it becomes very contemporary chic. Think warm wood tones with varied texture vs. tiny tiles so it feels more sophisticated and less locker room.
Consider a basketweave tile. Tile can work itself into a basketweave. This option is unique and unexpected, and you can’t beat the texture.
Remember, rectangles may trump squares. If you’ve got a long, narrow bathroom space, lay rectangular tiles instead of square to help the room appear wider.
Mix and match. There are few style rules with bathroom floors: if you can’t decide between several looks, consider combining them. As long as the scales are complementary, you’ll end up with a harmonious floor pattern unique only to you.
Create interest while maintaining the all-white bathroom. Bathrooms in all white are uber crisp and the epitome of clean. Capture the appeal with white furnishings and walls, but sneak in a little interest with marble flooring; its natural state will lend just the right amount of texture.
Complement the tile of your wall with a floor tile in a smaller scale. I know, you’ve heard it a million times: “scale, scale, scale,” but it really is the key to balancing so many looks in design. Don't worry so much about color (choose whatever you like); it’s really about getting the size of the tile right.
Get super-chic with herringbone. I don’t know what it is about herringbone floors, but I drool a little every time I see one. Notice how this bathroom is otherwise fairly simplified: the surprise element truly lies in the floor.
Go natural. It’s not very common that you find wooden floors in a bathroom, but one look at this photo will show you why it’s worth your consideration. This space feels like a warm and cozy den that happens to have a tub and a shower in its company. Remember, design is what you make of it. A bathroom need not feel like a bathroom!
Think plaid! This floor is wild. I’ve seen many a mosaic-tiled floor, but never in plaid. Regardless, it’s fun, playful and surely unique. Why not?
