Wheeeee! A new addition to my kitchen

Every year our local Restaurant supply store has giveaways. The 12 days of Christmas, etc.

Last week there was a draw for this lovely cobalt blue little dutch oven.

Yep, I won it! I've been very fortunate to have won items over the years with them. Last year was a beautiful red Emile Henry set of casserole dishes.

thanks to all who have posted so far, especially Eric. We can probably save/budget down the road for a kitchen redo, or do part of it ourselves. Additions would be a little harder for us except finish work (floors, tile, etc. Can do drywall even but would need to find time to do it). What that kitchen has is a U shaped layout, not too bad except there are overhanging cabinets between a small dining/family space and the kitchen. It's a counter/pass through kind of setup where someone can sit at stools and talk with the person in the kitchen....except the cabinets hang down so the person in the kitchen has to look under them. We would likely tear those out and relocate the stovetop to the perimeter wall and make that pass through an island. Then that entire space could become kitchen/dining. It is possible we could still move out a wall on that (kitchen) side of the house down the road too, we are in Hawaii so all the construction costs are much, much higher than mainland. So jealous of all the posters here who can put on a large extension for less than 50K. Plan A or Plan B will cost us about the same. We don't plan to sell and move anytime soon, but should we need to we're leaning toward sq. footage instead of just extending current bath and upgrading the kitchen. Our neighborhood is about 20 years old so people are beginning to redo those rooms as the fixtures and appliances are ageing. We redid all the appliances about three years ago with stainless finishes, new faucet/sink, and redid the countertop Corian, so the kitchen is livable - just need to clear out some clutter and make smarter usage on available storage space. We could paint or restain the cabinet doors to freshen it up. A few neighbors are creating the "big bang" kitchen now but I'm not certain a 70K upgrade will improve the value that much as a new neighborhood is planned about 5 miles away within the next couple of years. Would we love to live in a "WOW" kitchen, of course. But as with most people we have to make a decision on where it is best to spend the money for now. We could feasibly also add on a 2nd story in future years, but we prefer the single story and if we age-in-place as planned, the new bath will include wide accesses and no-curb shower.

Rhome-thanks for all your input-the ideas for the extra 'kid free' room sounds great! Seems as you have been in our home before! Linley- the banquette makes a lot of sense as an idea -doesn't require much room yet uses the space in a nice way. bmorepanic- thanks for at least reading so much of the posts that you could comment even without a 'good idea'. I agree, it could cost a lot for the wall /plumbing moves and we definitely don't want to get to that stage and then wish we had paid just a little more for the full addition so we will look at all these options carefully. And yes I will have a range in our plan somewhere -I just marked that spot as oven. I think of all the ones we have posted I like in this order 1) Full addition Plan (9/26) 2)No addition plan -one of the 1st ones posted in this series like 9/24 or 9/25 with a wet bar in the nook and maybe the banquette or simple cushion bench along the columns(build a half wall like mahlgold suggested). 3)Partial addition plan (9/27) but not sold on the island blocking the access to the dining room space as Rhome mentioned. Haven't relooked at some of the other ideas rhome suggested here as to flipping the DR location.

Since no one has given you any feedback yet, I'll take a shot... So you have what people call a barrier island. That means for the normal kitchen workflow you would have to walk around your island. If you read this thread, you will see the main problem with your workflow: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg111625296905.html (Maybe this thread should be made sticky?) To fix your workflow, you could either move your fridge to the wall with your sink or add a prep sink on your island. Also, through what door do you bring in your groceries? The small door in the kitchen to the foyer seems like it will encourage a traffic pattern through your kitchen. Having more counters/pantry there may be better. Regarding the powder room... having the guests go through the mudroom to the power room seems awkward and inconvenient. Could you have it open on the other side into the living room (I think that is the living room)? Also, you only need 2 more feet for a full bath. It seems like you have plenty of room to add a full bath if that is something that would be of value to you (it does help resale). Hopefully some others will chime in and help you out with this one.

Are you doing a flat roof? If not you will have some attic space. I'd rather have the shortest path to out with the blower closest to where needed. With a short path and blower close you won't need full speed most likely and thus if you get a blower with low sones rating it won't be that noisy.

Beautiful! I had various sizes and colors before the flood. I am slowly getting a few new ones. I love the blues and purple colors.

I remember your previous wins. I won a set of used markers at the end of my litho prep apprenticeship and that is honestly the only thing I've ever won. I think you should buy more lottery tickets! That is a gorgeous addition to your kitchen.

It's a 2 1/2 quart. I don't have anything that small, and I think it will be great for meatballs, chicken and rice, etc.

The little black tab are 4 rubber tabs that allow air to circulate under the lid when storing. Most of the new ones have those. My other cast iron dutch ovens, I just use flattened toilet paper rolls to keep the lid suspended to keep the rust at bay.

Interesting, I’ve never seen that. I don’t have a vast collection of these (only 2, in fact, one of which I inherited), so mine are never stored for more than a few days. They're in constant use. I call mine casseroles rather than Dutch ovens, although that term does seem to be getting more common.

Very nice winning for a very special Dutch oven.

Special? Yes. Very special.

Look at the design of the depressed lid and the tall knob. I believe this Dutch oven is made for also cooking with coal burning on top. Useful for special recipes and for camp fire cooking.

What a pretty color! Love my dutch oven! I don’t have to use it often but only because I don’t cook much anymore. One of my favorite things to make in it is no knead bread. So easy and so good.

Oh, that is pretty! Congratulations, I know with your cast iron cooking the dutch oven is going to fit right in.

Another person here who seldom wins, but then again, I seldom enter contests, LOL. That might help....

I did win a $50 credit to my electric bill in a cooking contest and once I won a pie server for a pumpkin recipe sponsored by Libby. And, when I was a child, I won 20 half cooked chicken halves in a bingo game when a corporate picnic got rained out and the chicken wasn't done, LOL. Now it would probably be thrown out, as it was only partially cooked and I don't remember how it was stored. Mother was ecstatic though, she went right home and froze them individually and we ate grilled chicken for quite some time...

The dutch oven is better than half cooked chicken. (grin)
