It was a beautiful ice cold day here today also. Bright blue skies, no wind, warm solar energy streaming through our south windows. i made a wonderful boule bread to go with our chicken stew. It’s a long walk to the mail and paper box. When we reentered the house, the house smelled and felt warm and cozy. I can’t say I love winter, but i love days like this.

As one who is bundled up but still chilled in a heated house, no matter what the climate may be, I appreciate your warming chili. :) I'm planning to make a good beef stew this week, with lots of roots.

It's much warmer today than it as been for at least the last couple of weeks. But that's all relative and it's still chilly enough for heart warming comfort food. Besides that, it's pouring down rain! I'm making navy bean soup with ham and skillet cornbread.

I'm running out of soup and chili in the freezer so I need to restock in the next couple weeks. On my list will be veggie beef soup with barley, ham and beans, chili, and white chicken chili or chicken tortilla soup.

It's been chilly here in SoCal, at least for us. My favorite weather here is this time of year when it's sunny and in the low 60's. Today will be warmer in the 70's but still chilly at night. I made a big pot of DH's favorite the other day...Split Pea With Ham from the Silver Palate. Thinking about Beef Bourguignon for tonight. It's a simplified version from Half Baked Harvest but tasty.

After being withou power from last monday morning through noon on Friday the gift of electicity is much appreciated. i made Allison Romans Spicy Bean Stew and loved it. it includes broccoli rabe which I enjoy. I also made Mark Bittmans quick preseved lemons which is bright and tasty for people like me who dont have 3 weeks of patience for the real thing.

Last night was beef barley vegetable soup. We diced and froze the leftover standing rib roast from Christmas night. So thawed that out, along with a baggie of frozen mirepoix made last summer, added two leeks that were still standing in the garden, two potatoes and a rutabaga keeping cool in the laundry room...eaten with a NYT no-knead crusty loaf. Very comforting. Stay warm everyone!

I love to make soups, and I frequently make lentil soup, but I generally do not make it unless I have some potatoes on hand, and I rarely buy those and often forget to. I'm also out of carrots, and so I will have to add potatoes, carrots, and celery to my grocery list. I might go shopping tomorrow.

Often I make Japanese style soups, and I always have plenty of rice and bean noodles on hand and usually some soba noodles. I like to add egg and/or shrimp to these soups, and I try to keep some shrimp in the freezer for this, but I do not have any right now. I also like to use dehydrated cabbage in Japanese soups, as well as kelp, dehydrated carrots (which I do have) and dehydrated bell pepper, but I also have fresh red bell pepper on hand.

Low to mid 60s here in Northern CA, but still chilly! Our 1914 house has single pane windows and not the best insulation! We don't heat during the day, so are happy for the heat and a nice warm meal!

I'm warming up a bean, kale, sausage soup for tonight along with some FB baguette slices and the final salad from a couple of days ago with the radishes I found today!

I wrote that last night. We're having hot desert winds, but the nights are still cold.

Currently 7 below here... It is chilly. Especially because we do not have much snow which keeps buildings warmer. We ’warm up’ tomorrow until Friday/Saturday when another cold front comes through.

I had last nights chili and cornbread for lunch with my sister. Tonight I made a noodle soup. Udon, maitake, seaweed, delicata squash, carrots, radishes, ginger, garlic, hot pepper, miso, eggs and lots of microgreens greens. It came out well.

I made enough of everything for lunch tomorrow - although I kept all the components separate.

@nancyjane_gardener, it’s a great version. I buy smoked ham shanks at the market that are about 1.75 lbs. each each. Perfect size for the recipe and very meaty.

LOL! Our recent cold snap got us down to the frigid temp of about 48F!

Last night I made a delicious soup for my book club, Cauliflower-White Bean Soup. We have a couple of dairy-free members so I am always on the lookout for good dairy-free recipes.

This was a very simple soup. Simply boil, then simmer, a chopped head of cauliflower, a can of white (cannellini) beans, and herbs/spices (I improvised because I didn't have the herbs the recipe called for) in 4 to 6 cups of stock. Use an immersion blender to make it smooth. Done!

This comes out thick and creamy, looking like you've used cream but there's no dairy, and it can easily be vegan.

The original recipe calls for adding homemade croutons but I wanted to make it more hearty so I added some chicken meatballs which I made separately by just mixing ground chicken and spices and baking them.

Turned out quite yummy.

I had stew meat from Sam's Club and planned on Beef Bourguignon for last night. I ended up making a beef stew with with root veggies and horseradish...very tasty.

Oh! That's where my stew went! I've been too busy to cook and have been wishing for the unmade stew.... It's not Maine kind of cold, but I'm cold....

It’s a balmy 20F tonight and I am still chilly. Getting frigid again tomorrow.

I took on a big hard with very tough skin. I peeled, chopped steamed and riced it - ended up with 8+ cups of mashed squash. Had it with the remainer of my veggie chili.

Also making bialys tonight.
