living room Home Decorating Design Dilemma

Design dilemma. Living room is too long.

We are redecorating our 1989 living room. The furniture is new, but the paint is going gray, and ditching the curtains as well. The tv/fireplace situation is on the left wall and the other couch is parallel to the one shown. Our current dilemma is I want to put an accent cabinet on the right (by the door to the backyard) for clutter that goes in and out, but not sure what to put on the left. Should I think symmetry and buy two, or think outside the box. There are a good 8-10 feet each direction without obstructions.

Your photos are inadequate to illustrate the dilemma. Stand all the way back and shoot toward the opposite side of the room so the issue is seen in context of the remaining space. While I'm at it, gray is way past trending and you'll paint yourself in a corner, so to speak, with the warm wood trim and floors if you go that way.

If you want useful -- I highly recommend a small table with two chairs in the one end. Also, bookcases with glass fronts, or, like I did -- one bookcase and one secretary that closes up to hide the paper and computer monitor. I use my 36" square table for so many purposes -- morning coffee, afternoon tea with a friend, making jewelry, drawing, computer, solving jigsaws. Mine has two leaves that pull out, so I can also bring chairs in from the dining room if I want to have four people in the space. My space isn't crowded. There's at least 4' of space between my table and the rug. You're fortunate to have fewer doors and windows, and a 15' width. My 1939 living room is 12' x 21', so it's divided into three spaces instead of two. My secretary and bookcase had to be on the other end of the room.

If you installed it replacing the window, then you could turn your sectional around to the opposite end of the room and it would work where the tv presently is and have a nice view of the new fireplace. Move your furniture around now and imagine the fireplace there. See if it works.

Definitely consider removing the wood door, or making it a pocket door for when you do need it. Then, among other things, you can put the TV flat on that wall, over a longer console, and add another chair facing the window. Also definitely subdivide the room into two zones, one with a grouping around the TV, and the other end for admiring the view, or reading, or chatting with friends -- a circle of chairs around a coffee table could be good, or else a book case and a reading chair (with lamp). Could also have a game/puzzle table, if that kind of area would serve your family better.

For the new TV, I would suggest a Samsung The Frame TV. This is my 75", hung on the wall, inside a built-in. I really like seeing art/color instead of a big black rectangle when not watching TV. I don't love the chest behind your sofa. For me, it is too tall, not quite wide enough and not a great color with the other elements in the space. I think you need to change out your recessed lights on the tray soffit ... they should not be making ugly circles on your walls. There are different types for different uses.

@decoenthusiaste Thanks for the suggestions! I’m not positive on the gray but definitely ready for something brighter and neutral so I can add bight accents like pillows, art, etc. I’ve been looking at dark Khaki walls and brown furniture for about 9 years! There is currently a trampoline that’s been outgrown that needs to be dismantled on the right so my pictures are hiding real life haha! I’ll update when it’s cleaned out! Hopefully that will help with feedback. I may have posted too prematurely, but in the planning phase. I’m definitely keeping the wood floors and trim. I love the warmth!

You'll get better suggestions, if you draw a layout where one inch equals one foot. Indicate doors, windows and the fireplace.
