A holiday gift when you don’t know the persons religion..

In the tiny village i live in there is one small store. The owner is of Indian descent, raised in America. I know he is not Sikh but not his religious beliefs. I would like to take a gift but not sure what is appropriate.

would it be better to wait until after the firat of the year? If I brought something like a dessert tray that he might not eat could I include a note that said feel free to put out for your customers?

(it would be ok in iur village, no pawing or breathing on it)

This is a needed store, unless you want to drive 20 miles and he works very hard.
