Not the documentary, but I watched a video on youtube on a true crime channel a while back if that's the same guy. He would perform surgery on someone and connect their insides to the wrong things on purpose. Is that the guy this is about? Yeah, he did this for a long time. Such a crazy but true story!

I listened to both of the podcasts. The first was Dr. Christopher Duntch, probably not spelled right. He was a neurosurgeon who botched many surgeries, including his best friend who he left permanently paralyzed. The second series was about a cancer doc in Michigan who would tell people that they had cancer when they didn't so he could "treat" them. I haven't watched the series on tv, but it sounds interesting. If you are interested, the podcasts are on Wondery.

You know, I have often wondered how many doctors tell people they have cancer(or whatever) when they really do not! This would be so easy for a money grubbing psychopath to do! Cancer would be easy because often times, people have no symptoms. I bet there are some doctors out there doing this! Always get a second opinion!

I love documentaries so will be looking for this one. What service did you watch it?

I watched it on Netflix. It is about Christopher Duntch.It is a documentary called Dr. Death, the Undoctored Story, which is only 3 episodes. There is also a series, which I haven't and won't watch, as I prefer documentaries.

The only trouble with multiple opinions is that many times, in a life or death or grave disability situation, you are in no position to get a second opinion. You've broken your neck skiing and the lovely Dr. Death is the neurosurgeon on call that night in the ED.

There can be other, less emergent circumstances where your ability to get more opinions is severly limited. I had pain in my knee. I stupidly put off seeing a doctor, hoping things would resolve on their own (which they had in the past). Saw an orthopaedic surgeon, by the time I had the initial meeting, MRI and learned of his plans for me, I was in a grave amount of pain, the kind that makes you understand how people became alcoholics and drug addicts back in the day before modern medicine. His diagnosis and plan was mind bogglingly inappropriate.

Fortunately one of my dearest friends is an orthopaedic surgeon. She does hands, though. One of her friends saw me asap, and I had the appropriate operation a bit later, but really, at some point time is not your friend with a medical situation. And mind you I had to see a third surgeon because my friends friend was out of my insurance network, and though he could tell me how much he would charge and I could decide to pay that, he said he had no idea what the surgical center would charge and it could be reasonable or crazy no way of knowing until you got the bill.

Which brings me to the topic of bad doctors and how do they get away with their behavior. I live in the Bay Area. This surgeon did his residency at Stanford, spines were his specialty, ha, and it turns out everyon knew him to be the egregious idiot he was. One day at a Junior League meeting I was recounting the story of what happened. I had not used his name and another woman jumped up and said, no doubt you are talking about so and so.

The doctor my friend sent me to did his residency with the egregious one, he said everyone knew was he was like, and yet, he practiced in my town, at a major clinic, not Stanford, though.

PS In case anyone is wondering, Dr. Egregious said I, a 35 year old woman at the time, had unknowingly snapped my quadracep. This is an injury usually sustained my football players apparently, but I managed it without noticing. Because I had waited so long to be seen, the muscle has shrunk and retracted and the surgeon would have to make a 10 " open incision to reattach the muscle, which he would not be able to do properly because of my neglect and so I would limp for the rest of my life.

Turns out I have a benign condition, synovial chondromatosis, which makes it so I grow rice sized pieces of cartiledge in my knee. You could not tell from the MRI. My surgeon went in arthoscopically to diagnose and fix the problem. I have no open incision, friends, and I do not limp :-)

I agree! My youngest sister has Crohns Disease - diagnosed when she was about 13. I became the black sheep in the family for a while (I was in my early 20's) for daring to question and "talk back" to the doctors. To this day I do not understand why people put doctors on such pedestals. They are humans and there are good ones and bad ones, just like any profession. Turns out my questioning saved my sister from having a surgery that would have left her with a colostomy for life. A small resection did the trick. My family let me spout off whenever I wanted after that!
