lighting for open concept living room / dining room

Im not a fan of the overhead harsh lighting recessing pot lights create but I do see the functionality of it. In the screenshot you can see there are windows, but its generally a very long narrow room. We're putting a chandelier over the dining room table, but what should we do about the living room? We'll have lamps for sure, as I love the eye level lighting. Do we put some pot lights in, maybe 6 in the living room with a ceiling flush mount to not distract from the chandelier in the dining room? OR LED STRIP lighting recessed into the ceiling and shining upwards or downwards along the walls with a ceiling flush mount? and would LED strip lighting create enough light?

the room is built but has no drywall yet. We're just figuring out electrical right now.

I will look to see if I have a floor plan, but if not, how would i go about creating one for you. I know I sound like an idiot but obviously I am clueless as to this kind of stuff and wish my husband would just let me hire a decorator lol! However, he just now gave me another big fat NO to hiring one lol! So needless to say, I am going to have to learn how to do this on my own and asking for help, however annoying I may be, is the only thing I know to do! So I apologize in advance for my ignorance! Hi Pamela! I would check out CB2 for dining furniture. They have really stepped up their game lately, and I feel like their modern designs will compliment your living room. They are also super affordable! Another suggestion...you got to paint those walls! I'm sorry but that yellow does not want to live with your pretty living room furniture. And window treatments can totally soften the whole space too! Check out Jenny Komenda from Little Green Notebook. She makes Ikea drapes look like custom! Good luck. :)

Once you have furniture in your space the chair rail will not be noticed on that side. It will not be the focal point. Your furnishings and artwork will be what people will see. Also, spaces that are completely balanced are not nearly as interesting as having a little asymmetry here and there imo.

Thank you very much. I figured it would be better to pair back and simplify things. My husband likes the cabinets but I thought about painting them black or grey, if I can't convince him it would be better to remove them completely. Love the idea about the black frame on the fireplace.

Ceiling pot lights in the living room only if they are on dimmers. Some are so bright, they make a living room look like a doctors office or bowling alley! Much better is a large table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

If I have a dining room chandelier and pendant over the coffee table, is that too busy? Should the coffee light be a ceiling flush mount instead?

Maybe a very limited combo of potlights "p", and then lamps, Light fixtures "LF", with some Scones "s"

We have an open concept plan too. Over our dining we have a chandelier and then a recessed light on the walkway. In the living we have 12 recessed lights, four that are angled to art. All on a dimmer. We could add layer lamps but we don’t have them.

oh skip the pendant hanging in the living room, ties the room to only one set up and too close to the chandy in the dining. also skip the landing stip look, LED is bright and you dont need all this lining and shadowing the other half of the room.
