Furniture Design Dilemma dining room

open concept dining / living room dilema

I have dark, espresso wood floors in my large open concept combined dining / living room space. One half of the room is the living room. I already have 2 grey sofas and a square glass Z-Gallery coffee. The sofas sit on a large white shag carpet with a grey diamond pattern. I am looking to purchase a new rectangular dining table that will seat at least 8 and a buffet. What color dining table should I purchase and what color rug should I put it on? There are dark beams on the ceiling and the walls are a cream color. The windows are trimmed in white. No artwork on the walls yet. The current dining set in the picture will be sold.

Hi Pamela! I would check out CB2 for dining furniture. They have really stepped up their game lately, and I feel like their modern designs will compliment your living room. They are also super affordable! Another suggestion...you got to paint those walls! I'm sorry but that yellow does not want to live with your pretty living room furniture. And window treatments can totally soften the whole space too! Check out Jenny Komenda from Little Green Notebook. She makes Ikea drapes look like custom! Good luck. :)

I like you living room! If you also use an area rug in your dining room you can do dark wood for your dining set. You just don't want a dark wood table on top of a dark wooden floor, without a rug. I would look for an area rug in a solid very light grey to tie in with your living room rug. This dining set would look stunning. Good luck!

Thank you very much. I figured it would be better to pair back and simplify things. My husband likes the cabinets but I thought about painting them black or grey, if I can't convince him it would be better to remove them completely. Love the idea about the black frame on the fireplace.

its large enough you can bring in botanical patterns or geometric patterned textiles. Color of your own choosing. The far wall w fireplace and clock in the living room would be nicer if lighter. You could take the same hue just lighter. It looks a little dreary/nearly gray which is going to be yesterday's aesthetic if not already...... then almost any color scheme would be nice or neutrals for that matter. More I look at it...ceiling is not high..I'd lighten that wall...others walls if you feel like it , and work w neutrals. Just a pop of blue for accents...or green....enjoy your new home!!!!

If you want a TV in that room the only place it can really go is to the right of the fireplace (maybe to the left if you find that works better for you). It is never recommended to put it over the fireplace unless there is nowhere else for it to go. You have more than enough space on the right for a nice console. Maybe in the future you can do something more dramatic with the fireplace as it looks small in that large wall (or maybe you are already and it's not finished yet). Put a tall piece of art over it (something that is less wide than the fireplace). Face your sofa toward the fireplace and TV. The dining table should have the long side parallel to the slider. I can't imagine it fitting the other direction. I don't think it's a bad thing to have your old furniture in there for a while. It will help you get an idea of the right size for new pieces. You may also get better advice if you post a graph paper drawing of the space so the commenters know exactly how much space you're working with. The perspective in pictures is sometimes misleading.

What is up with the windows being so low? I get that the ceiling is high but they seem extra low. You have to disguise that by getting the shades out of the window frame. Correct me if I'm wrong but the top of that TV is above 8 feet, is that right? If so, that is crazy high and couldn't possibly be comfortable to watch.
