DIL said that a week ago her students talked about one classmate testing positive, but it took days before CPS (Chicago Public Schools) to officially notify her. Now most schools in our area are calling early closure before the winter break, and some are pushing the return date back as well.

Omicron is doing what earlier Covid didn't -- infecting far and wide -- although the severity appears to be less, certainly for those vaccinated. A hospitalist was recently on TV, saying her hospital in Michigan was at 100% capacity, with 100% of the Covid patients unvaccinated.

BTW, my long-ago question about how hospitals were able to cope financially was answered by an AP news article last week. Taxpayers are paying. The government has been keeping hospitals and providers afloat. Sorry, I don't remember the enormous amount already spent. (An additional financial reason to 'bless the hearts' of Covid naysayers and anti-vaxxers.)

I'm sorry to hear this, but glad the illness has been mild. Based on what I'm reading in the news and seeing in my community, I think we'll see a lot more posts like this at the KT. Never have I personally known as many people with Covid as I do right now. According to a health official in the UK, Omicron's speed of transmission is unlike anything they've ever seen. It's alarming, but the good news is that most cases aren't severe--at least for the vaccinated. Best of luck to us all.

What alternatives are there?

Remember that the government is us (though decisions at all levels don't always or necessarily follow what many might want). Public health and welfare is a public matter. Without regard to small hospitals in outlying and rural areas that close because of an inability to attract enough docs and provide a variety of necessary quality care, hospitals that in normal times are needed, capable and busy can't be allowed to fail because of the massive public health crisis.

Oh, I'm not complaining. That we are ALL paying makes sense. What doesn't make any sense at all is the people creating the misinformation, of those causing the hardships -- of illness, of overburdened providers, of *cost*. WHERE does this originate?

Of course we are. And we will be paying for a long time for the care of those who are unable to return to normal lives, or for long term treatment of those who survived, and those who didn't.

This is getting way too common now. A friend just emailed she had FOUR grandkids who now have been exposed in school and had to be tested. Three positive and one negative and she planned Xmas with them.

Hmmm those symptoms sure don't sound like COVID. I have what I assume is a head cold. Will be tested in an hour so we will see. Schools here do not test from contact tracing or require it. They only send noted to parents that their child was "exposed". No testing until/unless a symptom arises.

yeonasky -- Oh, you're so kind, but it's not *our* anniversary today. It's our DS and DIL's 22nd. They'd planned a spa weekend at a resort, now scaled down to perhaps some bath bombs in the familly bathtub for DIL. DH and I are already 'signed up' for a 58th year together to be celebrated in 2022.

arcy -- A bad cold and fatigue are often the first signs of Covid. DGS tested positive at his school, a test confirmed by a lab. DS and DIL have positives from their 'home test kits' and will get lab results today. I only hope their 'feeling better now' doesn't go into reverse. I hope your test will be negative, or if positive, that it's a mild case where you can quarantine and recover at home. Chicago schools are starting "Test to Stay" now, trying to keep more kids both safe and in school. DIL is doing remote teaching again from the 'studio' DS created at home for her *last* year.

What a memorable Christmas this is going to be!
