Best Toothy Daylilies of 2021
Post photos of your fantastic toothed cultivars here. Our next category is supposed to be Color Changers, but I think most of you posted those in the Colors That Defy Description category. So I'm going to merge that one with Spotted and Streaked daylilies for Wednesday, which will be the last post in this series.
I do love toothy edges, especially white toothy edges.
Men in Black looked very dark and dramatic this season during the two weeks of lower temps. It usually reblooms.
Spacecoast Night Vision had fewer teeth sharp teeth during the cooler days.
Absolute Ripper has multiplied well during the four years I've had it. I know it reblooms for Nan, but it has never rebloomed here.
Violet Victory is not a good multiplier for me. But it's a great pod setter.
Entwined in the Vine always has plenty of teeth.
Armed to the Teeth has some striking flowers, but it doesn't alwys open well. It is a good rebloomer here.
Bat King is still blooming on short scapes in the second year.
Skater usually reblooms. This is the first year it didn't.
White Tooth is a good performer in every way. It usually has strong rebloom, and it sets every pod.
Rip Saw has finally grown into a nice clump with tall scapes. It refuses to set pods here.
Once Bitten Twice Shy was a new one last year. It rebloomed nicely.

2 years agoRoyal Invitation is one that sometimes shows shark's teeth, but other times has a flowing, white edge. The more heat, the more teeth.
Razor Sharp is a very early blooming toothy cultivar. It has multiplied slowly.

Comments (32)I realized I never got back to add the bud count fir Hakuna Matata. It is still blooming, and still getting multiple blooms every day, but the end is near. It has been blooming just I very a month now. The 5 best scapes, out of 9, were 41, 42, 46, 49, and, wait for it... 55. I have never had a plant bloom so well. I rarely have plants meet their bud count, much less exceed. Maybe it is location, Entwined in the Vine is pretty close, and had higher bud counts. There are several other daylilies near though that bloom well, but not like this. Wish the blooms were a little larger. It sets pods easily. I started seeds last winter, but stuff came up and they did not survive my neglect, but the seeds had really good germination....See MoreBest Pink Daylilies of 2021
Comments (43)Mantis, some of the pinks I showed are new for me this year and I can't comment much on performance.....but I will try to take the time to give my evaluations from now on since I agree with you that it's helpful. I was rushing to get the photos up. As for Pinewood Strawberry Moon, I wanted to get it and found it after much searching. Strangely, it went completely dormant and underground in September so I hope I didn't lose it. I did get it's pollen and have several crosses with it to start over the winter and sell. For a new plant, it bloomed very well and seemed vigorous so I don't know what happened. As for Boss Hogg, it is fairly new and taking it's sweet time doing much, just like RFK. Both started as single fans and RFK is still a single fan going into it's 3rd year. I've moved it twice hoping that would help. I'm frustrated by it's lack of vigor and increase. I had Coral Majority but it did not survive the Arctic Freeze this February. South Seas is one of my old favorites and it did survive. I think of it as orange, but that's me...........Brad: That seedling of yours out of Smoky Mountain Autumn is promising, and I always look forward to seeing SMA itself..............Celeste: Road to Hana is new to me and it looks lovely. I'll look it up. I grew Bittersweet Destiny 3 different times and always loved the color. Very unique. However I could not keep it going for more then a couple of years each time, so I finally gave up on it. 2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoSherry - That's a lovely photo of Buzz Saw. It's especially pretty with those little companion daisies. I used to grow that one and it performed pretty well for me.
Here are my best toothy seedlings. I've posted a few of these on other threads, but they fit so well on this thread that I'm repeating them.
Razor Sharp x Spacecoast Night Vision - This is my favorite toothy seedling. It improved this year to having bud counts of 11-23. Previously years it had bud counts of 8 and 5.
(Alan Lane Agin x Cosmic Sensation) x Betty Bush is a one-year-old. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this cross bloom next summer.
White Tooth x unknown is another one-year-old that bloomed this year. It multiplies very well, going from one to four fans. The other parent is either Born in California or God Save the Queen.
Another one year old out of Cowgirl Spurs and Skater. This one multiplies well too.
Seedling "Leonard", which is Skin of My Teeth x (Alan Lane Agin x Cosmic Sensation. The scapes were 40 inches tall last year with 5 inch blooms, and I don't like the scapes being that tall for a 5 inch flower. Bud counts are 18-34, but I don't know if I will register it.
Alan Lane Again x Midnight Castle had bud counts in the teens last year.
Destined to See x Back Scratcher seedling is lovely but only has 11 buds per scape. This is a four year old.

2 years agoWhat beauties! Debra, you have some lovely toothy ones. I really like Armed to the Teeth and Men in Black and Once Bitten Twice Shy. Your seedlings are great. I really like the first two--such rich color and beautiful watermarks.
Sherry, Buzz Saw does very well for us. We usually like the more colorful ones, but it has a permanent place in our garden.
I got my computer back just in time for the toothy daylilies of which we have many. Luckily for you all, I didn't get pictures of all of them this year. Otherwise, this post would have been extremely long.
Man-eating Bat could become one of my favorites. It's too new to know how it will perform. It was just a single fan when purchased.
We fear that Bengali will be on the tender side. It has gone through 2 winters, but hasn't increased much.
Falconer was new last season and spent the summer in a pot. We really like this flower.
Here is our Absolute Ripper. It has not increased much for us.
Barracuda Bay was the first toothy daylily we owned. At the time we bought it we thought we had spent a great deal of money on it. It was $25.
Candy Queen is a small flower. It's another that we fear may be somewhat tender.
Colorful Chaos Nelli is a great, robust grower, but the flower is a bit dull in color. This pictures makes the color look more vibrant than it is.

2 years agoCrimson Stories doesn't increase well for us, but it has been an important breeder for us.
Forestlake Point Lace is one of our favorite yellows.
Fruitful Discovery is from Richard Norris. He doesn't specifically breed for teeth, but like all his plants, this performs well for us.
Glowing Quasar is a lovely one. The flower in the background is Forestlake Becky, a great grower.
I am not overly fond of the color of Irish Vampire Fangs. It's a bit dirty in person.
Maynard Max is a great grower, but it won't set seed for me.
Raggedy Man is one of our favorites. It's also a late bloomer.

2 years agoIt seems as if the color on Rosie Cotton's Ribbons keeps getting better and better. I just wish the height and bud count could get better.
So far Terrorsaur has not reached its registered height of 30 inches.
Totally Toothy does not make very big fans. Many of the toothy ones are like that, probably a characteristic handed down from Forestlake Ragamuffin.
Wickedly Wild and Wonderful has never reached its published stats here, yet it grow and blooms well every year.
That's all the named toothies for me. I will put a few seedling toothies in the next comment.

Nancy, I like your Ruffled Strawberry Parfait x Extreme Tangerine seedling. It is very eye-catching!
As for me, toothies are just coming into favor with me. At first I was undecided if I liked them or not but they grew on me. Now I like them quite a lot and the few I acquired this year came late and did not bloom for me because they came from a warmer climate where they had already bloomed. I'm looking forward to next year to see what they will do.
These are all I have that bloomed:
Absolute Ripper, brand new and a huge bloom on a tiny plant
Once and For All, also brand new and didn't have time to get very 'toothy'
a toothy seedling of mine, color needs improvement
Violet Predator, also brand new and it was late summer/early Fall when it bloomed so too cool for there to be teeth

2 years agolast modified: 2 years agoHoosier Nan - You have so many nice ones! My favorites among the seedlings are Bodacious Bite X (Wolverine X On Your Knees You Will Find Him). Pineapple Bites X Extreme Tangerine, and Snidely Whiplash X (Sonoran Desert Rose X Crimson Stories). Among the registered ones, Crimson Stories, Candy Queen and Raggedy Man grab me the most.
Maryl - Those are such nice photos of Buzz Saw and Fringy!
Celeste - I really like the colors on Violet Predator and Thistles and Thorns. I wonder how toothy those would be in my climate.
Thanks to those of your who commented on the first seedling. It rarely looks that dark a purple. That picture was taken when the weather changed from very hot to very cool. It normally looks more like this:
