Rearranging some things....
Comments (23)Thank you all so much!! Susan, I do still like the fabric. Here is what I am learning (finally) is to use neutrals on the pieces you can't change yourself and the printed fabrics on items easily changed. So for DR chairs - if you can change them yourself...no problem! The fabric really does have a wonderful array of colors. What color for the Billy's? Black/brown or white? If I do white...have my painter make them match the kitchen cabinets? Cream/glaze? Les, I love the idea of a longer light fixture. There is one by Vaughan that I have drooled over for a year or so but KNOW it is sooooo out of the budget. I do like the one you linked very much. You don't think that would be "off" with the current pendants? Drapes.....I have wanted some but if you can see...the FP pratically hits the doors & there is no room for the stack back. Carol, I love the PB Peytons!! I see what you are saying, Susan, about shutters & I do love my view & birds. I have cellulars under the big window & they are so easy to pull up and down when the sun comes in (cheap/cordless) so I could do those on the doors & add some moulding to cover the stack. I want to go party at Vampiressrn!! It sounds like you have the set up & an occassional band - woo hoo!! Eager...itis an old duron color - ardmore green. Sherwin wms can mix it for you. As well as lowes/hd. Thanks! Homebodymom :& Perky 2....u hit it w the fabrics - really, the ottoman is the odd man out. I would like something to tie everything together. Not really sure the chairs (slipcovers) go in that room or not. And yes, I'll try to save some wine for our GW party!! DH stocks up when he goes to Atlanta b/c it's so much cheaper down there and we drink cheap!! LOL Ingrid - I promise there aren 't usually that many bottles on my counters!! LOL Papers, yes!! I see what your saying about the plate rack being heavy on that wall. Perhaps, just hang the assorted plates on the wall? What about rugs? Big one for under the table? Round one for the club chairs? Oh, I had never heard of Billy's before GW or Ikea for that matter. So thank you, Teacats!! And here is a really cool thing....they are notched out on the bottom for the baseboard. Those Sweedes think of everything!! Colors for Billy.... White & have painter match cabinets... Or black Smiles:)...See MoreHelp: Is cornice over window outdated?
Comments (10)hmmmm interesting to think about. If I put a brand new cornice up today is that continuing a dated look, but if I have a cohesive room and it includes a cornice because the room was put together a few years ago does it scream dated when entering? IDK but what I know is I LOVE LOVE LOVE my wood cornices. DH made them and they will be in place until the day I leave this home. I am bolstered in my conviction by the compliments they continue to receive after all these years. Perhaps the shape/style/material in the cornice matters most?...See MoreCheap tips to save money on heat / air costs
Comments (26)I'd like to second the recommendation for a home energy assessment. Here, it's a $50 co-pay and the service is funded through fees charged on everyone's electric bill. While the visit was a bit underwhelming, the blower door test was worth the whole visit. It came as a complete surprise that the draft created sucked in the most air along the top trim of all the windows. The contractors applied a bead of clear caulk over many (60+ windows, so it will be addressed when painting is done). I learned that the attic air sealing can make a big difference but it's often a sizable project to do it completely. You should really remove the insulation to get at all the areas. A big benefit in my location is that the assessment qualifies you to have a significant discount for insulation work. If NC has a similar program you may get that crawl spaced addressed for very little cost. In addition to insulation, vapor barriers may help on the basement/crawl ceiling. If your attic is a pull down hatch, it should have an insulation 'box' that fits over the hatch opening. Attic vents and exhaust fans should be checked for proper operation to let that heat out. Any lights cut into the ceiling can have a cap put over the opening in the attic. Vents in the ceiling (bath) should be sealed in the attic around the cut out. In addition to a blower door test, thermal imaging might be helpful. I think you can rent the infrared scanning equipment to identify hot and cool spots. If you're lucky, the energy audit will include that service. Regarding the windows: many new windows will have an R value of 3. Consider that in light of R-30 or higher wall insulation. If the old ones are solid and properly installed and insulated, new ones will not help much. One of the most energy efficient window treatments is the honeycomb cellular shade and the double cells are more insulative. I'm not enamored of them but they sort of disappear when not in use. Other cheap stuff: weather stripping, more caulking inside and out, thin foam insulation pieces that go behind wall switches and plugs on outside walls - plus baby safe outlet covers (shocking how much cold air comes through those unused plugs in winter), well controlled use of expandable foam not just at pipes but also (very carefully done) around electrical boxes on outside walls. link Home Energy Checklist...See MoreWould cellular shades look better?
Comments (8)If you liked them before, you'll probably like them again. I have sheer cellular shades in public rooms and wood slat blinds in the bedrooms, so I like a mix. As long as you don't buy the cheapest available and they actually fit your windows they should be a big improvement over what you have. I think the disadvantage of cellular shades is that they're either up or down, there is no middle ground, that's why mine are sheer. There is also a product called solar shades which have a more contemporary look and they're easier to see through when down. If you put up drapes in the space where the fireplace is you will also need to put them in the kitchen eating area....See MoreDiana Bier Interiors, LLC
