Over wintering San Marzano tomatoes?

I picked up a start from the local community garden last spring and said "why not?"

I didn't get any tomatoes from it because I planted it so late.

The ding danged thing is looking just beautiful and healthy!

We rarely get frost at our place in town since we're kind of surrounded by streets and a cement block wall.

Any thoughts on it producing next spring if it survives?

Maybe give it a dose of "Bloom Booster" by Miracle Gro- in early spring.

Cranberry, I've had difficulty growing San Marzano Redorta. Every year I have the same problem that you described. They are not disease resistant/tolerant, but then they don't claim to be.. This year I planted Celebrity tomatoes (by seed) twice. First planting was for the setting out in the garden. Second planting was for replacements to the San Marzano Redorta. So far I've replaced 3 of my 14 SM plants, and have another plant which looks a but suspect. Since your plants are still in the seedling stage, wouldn't planting seeds vs. purchasing plants be a better option? I not sure about when to plant in WI but it seems like you may have time to do this? You'd also have backups for potential future losses. I plant my seeds in a plastic flower planter and then move directly to the garden.

Hmmm, My plants are 4' apart in rows that are 5' apart. So my plants aren't "heavily over crowded." The issue is that the San Marzanos develop a lot of stems from the main one and tying loosely to the stake results in a interwined tangle. San Marzanos can easily grow to 10 feet in length. The tomato cages that I see at garden centers are about 4' high with 6+ inches to be inserted in the ground. THAT is the reason I use 2"x2" stakes 6' long driven a foot in the ground. Granted, pruing does decrease production, however proper pruning has been around as long as agriculture. e.g. If you don't prune fruit trees you'll end up with a lot of little fruit instead of the size that you want. Also, ever not prune your grapes??? :-) Also, I believe that tomatoes are fruit? Guess I'll do some judicious pruning and report back if anyone's interested. Ev

Thanks for the advice, but I use Opera browser and prefer it after many years of using at least five others. I don't use IExplorer at all because Opera is so much better. I did load Firefox but for some reason cannot use it even when I uninstall and reinstall it. (3 times) Nothing will load past the third window, and the window that should show Preferences is a gray blank nothing, no matter how long I wait. I'm NOT going to any more trouble about using another browser just for GardenWeb when Opera is the best browser I've found. And I don't have trouble on any other site, though actually I don't know of other sites that use this kind of advertising. If the tech people will make the Opt Out apply to Opera, I'll be happy. Otherwise, I'll asterisk words when I know they'll be underlined.

According to a research review on the origin of San Marzano around 1960, there is no real one San Marzano variety. No one source can truly claim they have "the San Marzano". At it's origin, San Marzano was a "type", never a single variety, that was grown in Italy. Plants and fruit varied. Seeds of these different types were widely distributed from different sources in Italy throughout Europe, the US and South America and by 1960 there existed many different ones based on regional preferences. So many different lines are called 'San Marzano'. Those claiming they have the original are probably doing so for marketing purposes or to somehow claim it is theirs. So if it's something you like go ahead and save it. If it wasn't a hybrid and didn't cross it should come back to that type.

I left my Tomato out all winter and just protected it from a few frosts. It survived and produced next summer. I’d give it a try.

I bet all my veggies will be gone by the time I get back. The nights have been really cold for this time of year. That means the eggplants, peppers, okra and tomatoes will be a wilted mess because I haven’t been there to protect them. Oh well………..

I pulled the zucchini and green bean stuff from that bed and the tomato plant still looks healthy, despite some close to freezing temperatures! Just as an experiment, maybe I'll tent it with plastic!

take some of the branches and cut them and start them in water ... then transplant when roots show

Well, had other things on my plate today and forgot to pick the cuttings, so I'm now listening to the news and hearing we'll be having the coldest night/morning yet! I might have dropped the ball!
