Thanks for the advice Stressbaby and Mikesid! I moved it to the north side of the house for now and in a slightly more sheltered location. The variety is called Hipolito. I haven't been able to locate much info on this variety and the Pine Island site didn't offer a whole lot of info, nor did the employee I spoke to. Anyways, I'm sure it got some shock between the bright sun and the wind. I think it is a full size variety. I'll give you guys an update in a few days if it comes around. Meanwhile, does anyone have any suggestions on a potting media that works good for these guys? I'm thinking of growing it with more organic methods. Timmy

I fear the source of both of your problems is over-watering. Yellowing leaves is too much water and leaf-roll (where the leaves look like they aren't "unfurling") can also be caused by too much water. ballethel - tomatoes are seldom "maintenance free" ;) so you were quite lucky in the past. Now wth different soil you may have to be more careful as Dave said. At least until you have it tested and know more about its components, pH, and nutrient levels. Many things can cause plants to "shriveling up and instead of growing, the plants look like they are actually getting smaller" but excess water causes root rot and is the most common cause. Water only when your finger stuck deep into the soil is dry. When these dry out well and begin to recover, give them a mild (1/2 strength) dose of a balanced liquid fertilizer and then mulch them well. Contact your local county extension office to arrange for a soil test ASAP. Good luck with your plants. Dave

I wouldn't fret too much about some yellow leaves here and there. Your toms look fine to me. My toms can sometimes look pretty shabby as the season progresses. That said, you want to avoid killing it with kindness. You might be getting some fried roots with a small black pot in direct sun. Water might not be penetrating the newspaper barrier on top of the soil. Tomatoes are resilient enough and do well enough if we just leverage their will to live. :) I grow toms year round in EarthBoxes using Dr Earth organic tom & veg fertilizer (5-7-4). One of the tenets of organic gardening is the use of water insoluble forms on nitrogen (Dr Earth fits the bill). Weekly/weakly fish emulsion and such is fine as well as a supplement, but not necessary. Organic EarthBox tomatoes:

I have that Calathea as well, beautiful plant. Calathea "opens up" for daytime and "closes" at night. Mine moves most when it gets alot of water. I am curious what others will say about the spots. My plant also has a few small round spots like yours but I have no idea what they are. I thought maybe leftover marks after my long battle with mites or maybe a small sunburn caused by careless misting... They do not spread though, so I'm not that worried, but it would be good to know how to avoid it. For watering I usually use tap water as well, just not straight from the tap. If possible, I let the water stay in a can overnight before I use it for watering. I don't know if that is good or necessary but my Calathea is doing fine and I have it for 2 years. I definitely agree on the drainage hole. A pot with a hole is a must.
