Pom leaves shriveling and turning black

I could use a little advice. I just received a pom in the mail from Pine Island and placed it in my back porch (south facing) because I read they like full sun. The its only the first full day I've had it and the younger new growth is already turning black and shriveling up. I watered it when I got it. Is this due to too much sun, or too much wind, or possibly cooler evening temps (probably around high 40s)? I could use some tips from someone experienced in growing these in containers outside and possibly in a northern area. Any and all help is appreciated.

Probably all of the above. The plant may have had some shock from shipping, then the sudden south/wind exposure.

The (dwarf) poms I grow are pretty tough. It should recover. Bring it back under some shade for a few days.

What kind did you get? I had read that the fruit of a dwarf pom wasn't much to talk about, but mine are tennis ball sized and quite tasty. We use them on salads and they make a nice pomegranate vinagarette dressing.

I recently decided to move my pom to get more sunlight. I thought I killed it when all the leaves fell off. It started putting out new growth after 6 weeks but it's doing fine now. Give it some time they are pretty resilient plants. Good luck!

Julia, Kathy has it totally correct.....Example...those that I sent you were cut back....Fans and scapes. Those will slowly die back. From the center of the clumps and each fan, new growth will appear. You should see it starting in about 2 weeks from planting. As she also said...you must water thoroughly. Too get the ground wet 2-8 inches below the crust, takes a great deal of water. To see how effective you are, do as Kathy said.....dig down a few inches about 6 inches out from your new planting. You may be suprised to see dry ground, even after standing there with a sprinkler/nozzle and thinking you had watered well. You want to insure the new plants get off to a good start so water real well. Once they are established it is "Ideal" to insure they get about an inch of water per week. Or you can do as I do with my Mother Nature Bed......"Plant it and forget it".....LOL Hope it survives...:) Hope this helps...... Rick

I had the same thing happen to me a several years ago. It started turning black the first year I planted it. I believe my soil was also getting too much water, we had just put in a north facing raised bed (dense unammended top soil) along with a new lawn and I was watering often. It was barely hanging on by a thread at the end of the season and did not reappear the following year. I think both of our problems are due to over watering. One thing you can do is dig it up and add some sand to the soil around it to help with drainage. It works quite well. I have included a link that will help out a bit I think. When the heat turns up, as it probably is now in south Florida/Miami, many potted plants start to suffer. People scratch their heads because the plants have been doing fine up until! The cause is often over-heated roots. The roots of potted plants, especially plants in dark or black pots, are not in the same condition as if planted in the ground. Roots in the ground stay cool. Roots in a pot get heated up - and sometimes cooked. So no matter how much water you provide, they may still be unhappy. We commonly have posts about this time every year regarding potted hibiscus. Hibiscus are a full-sun plant - but not in black pots, LOL. I don't have any crotons, or experience with them, but this might be the case with your plants (?). As with any potted plant that is suffering, I move them to shade until they recover. I hope yours bounce right back. Sometimes, the leaf will grow a plantlet and no roots; sometimes, just the roots and no plantlet. And often both. And sometimes it will not grow anything.Time will tell if it will grow roots too :) Leave the leaf on until it dries up and shrivels completely, plantlet is using the moisture & nutrients from it. It often just falls off when 'done'.

Thanks for the advice Stressbaby and Mikesid! I moved it to the north side of the house for now and in a slightly more sheltered location. The variety is called Hipolito. I haven't been able to locate much info on this variety and the Pine Island site didn't offer a whole lot of info, nor did the employee I spoke to. Anyways, I'm sure it got some shock between the bright sun and the wind. I think it is a full size variety. I'll give you guys an update in a few days if it comes around. Meanwhile, does anyone have any suggestions on a potting media that works good for these guys? I'm thinking of growing it with more organic methods.
