What is the shagreen made out of, it is paper or vinyl? I would remove the chair rail. You may need to upgrade the lighting a bit if you use a dark color. (I had a near black stairwell in my last condo. It was definitely dark...but there have been two owners since and all have kept it).

I would reserve use of the shagreen to a small, intimate space like an office or the powder room.

With good lighting, definitely doable.

Why not paint the foyer a dark blue color first, before you invest in the material and extra labor of wallpaper?

It is difficult and expensive to have wallpaper installed where there are high ceilings. While I think what you're looking at could be stunning, bear in mind that at some point it will need to come down. Either you will get tired of it or it will make your house difficult to sell. I'm not sure it was a coincidence that right after we removed the wallpaper in the foyer of our previous house while it was on the market we got two offers. This was after it was on the market six weeks.

At the price point you are looking at I would consider Phillip Jeffries Wallcovering or Wolf Gordon as well. It is contract width (52-54") so half as many seams. Some of the vinyl coverings are very similar to what you are looking at, and would be very durable in a stairwell area.

If you love it go for it. i wouldn’t worry about what some imaginary buyer would think of it. Depending upon your market , in my area, things like paint, wallpaper wallpaper, light fixtures, flooring , etc. are non issues since most buyers redo most things anyway.

with respect to whether you will tire of it, that depends upon you. I don’t easily tire of things I love. Furthermore, IF you do tire of it eventually, just amortize the-cost of it during the years you enjoyed it!

Thanks everyone! we are replacing our entry fixture as well, so hopefully we will get more light into the space. i do like the idea of having this in my powder room instead. perhaps ill find something else a bit brighter or with a modern pattern for the foyer. thanks for the feedback!
