Recommendations for washer and dryer... (cross posted on Appliances)
Comments (12)I'm buying a Speed Queen washer and dryer this week. Replacing a fabulous 25 year old Whirlpool Gold set that we have repaired ourselves for the past ten years. Sad to see it go, but it's becoming difficult to get replacement parts for it, some are no longer made. Have been very disappointed with our KitchenAid dishwasher so we are looking beyond Whirlpool for the first time ever. We will purchase the most basic Speed Queen pair, because this set is the easiest to fix. This will probably be the last W/D we buy and we will probably pass it down to one of our children. They aren't sexy, but they are built in America and the machinery is all metal. Simple cycles. Endless positive reviews. I'm not expecting my washer and dryer to enhance the decor in my home, just want clean laundry. Our reliable appliance parts store owner told us to avoid everything Samsung and LG, and GE as well because they break down quickly and the computerized components are expensive to replace. We trust his opinion completely, he grew up in this family business and guided us through many repairs to our Whirlpool set. He knows what models need the most significant repairs, even repairmen buy parts through his shop. I am confident that we will get another 25 years from the Speed Queen pair. The warranty is the best in the industry. Looking forward to it, thanks to all on the laundry forum who have helped make this decision an easy one! Comments (12)Most folks have never pulled off the front panel of their dryer which means they have never cleaned it for lint deposits, ever. Same goes for the duct work. So, I would start by cleaning it out, remembering to disconnect power cord before attempting service. You would be amazed how lint deposits can alter the performance of a dryer. Comments (4)There are no "pumps" involved in water dripping into the tub. There's a hot and cold water valve, each replaceable separately. The valves don't pump anything, they simply open or close to allow the incoming hot and/or cold water to flow or not. Either one can wear and fail to close fully, or get clogged with a bit of debris (such as sand/grit) in the water supply and fail to close fully. Shutting off the supply faucets when done using the machine will prevent the dripping ... although the suspect valve(s) may get worse and the dripping may increase to a more substantial flow. A squeak when filling could be the main motor/basket bearing (the basket rotates at 25 RPM while filling, but also much faster during spin) ... or bearings going bad on the drain/recirculation pump, which runs for several mins during the Eco Active period at the start of all cycles except Perm Press, and of course also runs during drain and spin periods. A failed auto-dry sensor won't have any affect on how long a load takes to dry on Timed. The heat and airflow operates exactly the same on both Auto and Timed ... the difference is the sensor controls the movement of the timer on Auto. The dryer has two heating elements, perhaps one of them has failed which reduces the heat input and that *will* result in a longer drying time....See MoreWasher and Dryer Recommendations
Comments (23)I have to replace a 14 yo Bosch Nexxt 800 washing machine that I loved for as long as parts were availablel to keep it going. NOW I have to rip out a lot of my laundry room bc the Bosch washer is less than 38" tall (close to 37") and I stupidly thought that height would be standard when I had our Caesarstone counters installed over both front loading washer and dryer. Live and learn. Anyway, I was all set to replace with $peedqueen, but when I went to their website to check out the options, I read a bunch of 1 and 2 star reviews that have pretty much decided against them. Such a bummer. I guess all washers will have their issues, but I can't spend over $2K unless the reliability (and repairability if something goes wrong) isn't super solid. PS - If anyone knows of a decent washer/dryer that are under 37.5" tall I'd buy them instantly to avoid ripping out my countertop!...See Morecoconutdrop
