Paint concrete landing?

I just refreshed my concrete front steps with a new coat of paint. It makes the landing look even worse. The landing has splotches of red and green color from years past that will not come off. What would be the pros and cons of painting the landing the same color? I’m using Behr concrete paint. i would only paint the landing area directly in front of the steps. it is smooth concrete and the walkway to the left of the steps ia rough.

Remove the garden hose, bags, green pail and then paint the landing same color of the steps. A clear path will do wonders for the looks of the entrance to your home.

Ha! touche! its not usually junked up but im having work done inside and outside of my house and the garage is full right now.

Craftsman style house goes with my cottage style of gardening. One of the two blue spruce in the pictures, the one on the right, came down in a big rain and windstorm early this spring. So there is a lot more light in the front. That side is now in full sun. As to lots of land, I don't have it. I have a typical suburban size lot. What makes it all work here as far as everything I have planted is that the yard is all multilevel. Harder to deal with but more things can be squeeezed in. It would never all work if it was just level. The parking lot you can see across the street is to a 16 acre park and beach so its really very nice here in the summer. Its for our City residents but never crowded just afew people arounhd weekdays and not that much more on weekends. Next to it immediately adjoining so you can walk from one into the other is a large county nature preserve, this time all wooded. Also with shoreline accress. I remember going fishing there with my dad when I was a young child. Well, I went with him. He fished, I played around.

Any of the box store or hardware store available "concrete paints" will lose adhesion and peel much much quicker than an epoxy paint will. They aren't worth your time or money. As handymac says, a two part industrial epoxy is what you need. They are available from a local real paint store and won't be cheap. The minimum purchase quantity of such a product might provide enough to cover the walkway as well as the porch. You will not get a "natural" concrete look as natural concrete has variation in it's color. You can get a uniform gray though. Preparing the surface will include cleaning it and etching it with acid in order to open the pores and create a tooth for the paint to adhere. It is DIYable if you are careful and wear proper PPE and use common sense safety practices when handling the acid.

Usually the only concern is adhesion of one paint to another. Like all projects, the PREPARATION is KEY. If you miss a step you will get bubbling and peeling. The same is true for the old exposed concrete. You will have to find out what type of cleaners have been used and how to get rid of them (known as contamination) without removing the existing paint (ahhhh....there in lies the rub). I would start with a test patch over BOTH surfaces. Clean-up/prepare a 2ft x 2ft section of concrete over both concrete slabs. Do ALL the techniques you NEED to do to get this stuff clean (sweep, mop, dry-vac, mop, dry-vac, mop, dry-vac, etc) until you feel the section is as clean as possible. Then use a primer/bonding agent over that area (regardless of the surface) and then use the epoxy paint. Wait for 2-4 weeks (yes....WEEKS) to see if there are any issues. Is this a suspended slab (like a 5th story apartment) or is the ground level?

It's not that big of an area and that all definitely has to go and the ground graded properly. You still would want a pad at the very least for the lower door so I think a overall new pad/patio with the footers set properly for the deck posts would be the way to go. It will give you potential storage under the deck as well.

Hmm, where would you stop the color? at that line that intersects with the hose?

Yes, but since it’s not a straight line where the smooth concrete joints to the rough concrete I would use painters tape to create a straight line as close as possible to the rough concrete and The end of the bottom step.

I think, I would have that landing and the sidewalk, all power washed, and then make your decision, before painting it. You may find out, it will look just fine, without painting. I dont think ending by the sidewalk, works as well as the porch ending at the landing.

Power washing it is a good idea. Then I would do nothing. I personally like the look of old concrete and do not understand peoples need to paint it. My mom was adamant about keeping her front concrete patio (15*6 or so) looking like new and used something that eventually ate the top layer off of it.

Painted concrete draws attention to itself and will deteriorate over time. I agree with the advice to pressure wash it and call it good.
