Lighting Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Enough room for bath sconces?

Hi Houzz friends! We are in the middle of our new build and while I had envisioned sconces beside my bathroom mirrors I'm worried things are getting too tight. We have 36" sink cabinets with a 24" cabinet inbetween. I've been looking at sconces anywhere from 5-8" wide. Is this doable or does it make our mirrors too small? Our builder said he doesn't like mirrors narrower than 24". I'm attaching the cabinet design (can't be changed now) and my sketched attempt to make something work, or if we have to, stick with a 3-light overhead option. Each side of the cabs is flanked by a wall so we could also put sconces there but I wasn't sure if that would block the mirror and/or look unbalanced with sconces between the mirrors. Thanks in advance for your sage advice!

I did it in one of my secondary bathrooms, but still in process so the final outcome isn't known yet! I did narrow medicine cabinets that are 20" wide and the sconces are linear 3" wide x 26" high. The vanity is 78". I also only did one sconce in the middle.

Make sure you also add recessed light to the bathroom. All my bathrooms have 2 in the shower and at least 2 more in the bathroom, depending on size. Group the sconces, floor area and shower area separately and add dimmers to all.

Thanks Amy :-) But I figure that if this is the worst problem we have (and it has been so far) then we're doing pretty good... just wanted to give a heads-up to others. I really don't think we'd have had this problem without #1,2 or 3. And our builder *has* been great all the way around. He takes a lot of pride in his homes and rightfully so.

Yes, that should be enough. 120 watts is more than enough. Guests won't be shaving or putting on make-up (except maybe lipstick). I'd even put them on dimmers. Mood is more important than brilliance in a powder room.

Master bath layout - enough space between tub and shower?

I"m short on time, but wanted to post something that's been swirling in my brain. I think walk in closets are lovely if you have the space, but I just don't think you have the space; I'm pretty confident that the minimum recommended width of a closet is 5'. How about a walk- through closet to your bathroom? My guesstimate is that you could have 6' wide, reach in closets on either side of a 42" hallway. I've seen lots of pictures with a beautiful tub centered under a window and flanked by vanities, so I appreciate that look might be a priority to you. I just moved all that over to the other window. I tucked the toilet and shower around the corner. Depending on the location of the window, you might be able to have a pocket door, but if not, a wall would add a lot of privacy (avoid seeing the reflection of someone on the toilet from the entrance or the rest of the bathroom.) Anyhoo. Here's a rough drawing. If aging in place is a concern, I'd put the shower and toilet on the exterior or bedroom wall, so you have the option of creating a quicker route to the toilet (through the closet wall) in the future.

The shower footprint room in even a 36” wide tub is pretty small. Much smaller than in a 36” shower. A shower only is a much nicer experience, where you don’t brush elbows against walls, or have your bum bump a curtain or door when bending over to wash your toes. It is also less slippery, and safer. If I were the husband in this situation, I would not be happy that I was being reduced to a second class showering experience in my home. He may not know it, but that is what would be the result. It would be a second class tub experience for you as well. If you like a tub, you are probably pretty frustrated with how shallow they can be, and how little of your body gets submerged. That is the big drawback of a tub shower. It has to be shallow enough to step over to use as a shower. A genuine deep soaking tub can fix that. One with a deck surround can give you a place for your towels, books, glass of wine, etc. It improves the experience for you. Settling for less will happen enough in a build. I‘m not saying build a owner’s bath larger than your family room with his and her complete separate masters. But any owner’s bath that does not cater to each user’s preferences, is not a owner’s bath for a custom home. Even entry level new build tract homes have separate tubs and showers for the main bath. Because it is expected for the main bath.

Thanks @chispa! We'll have recessed lighting and hopefully good natural light! Do you mind sharing the sconces you chose? I'm having a hard time finding ones narrower than 5" that I like.

i used led mirrors (giant makeup mirrors) my setup is almost the same as yours

@Abbey L, here is the sconce. You can choose different lengths, color temp (kelvin) and finish.

How would these fit? 30" (vanity width) - 24" (mirror width) = 6" / 2 = 3". You only have 3" on either side of the mirror (and between the mirror and the wall). Go with over-the-mirror lights.

My bad @wdccruise! Sink vanities are 36" wide, not 30". That's what I get for late night attempted problem solving. So, given that, trying to figure out if smaller mirrors will still suffice and fit sconces or if it'll look too crammed on the 2 sides.

Here's a sconce I used in my master bath that may work in a tighter space. I have it paired with a more ornate antique mirror so I needed something very simple.
