Master bath layout - enough space between tub and shower?
We are putting in a new master bath where we used to have a bedroom so we have freedom with our layout. it's going to be small 12x9 with a small potion cut out because of a closet that we are putting on the other side. As it works out, we will put a small freestanding tub across from the shower stall. there will be approximately 2 1/2' to pass between them. What do you think? Is that enough room? Does anyone have a similar layout? Thanks!

Comments (7)Thanks for all your thoughts! homeybird- we did briefly consider the wetroom idea, however, we're in Maine (brrrrrr), this room has 3 exterior walls and a poorly insulated floor, AND we need to be a little more traditional for resale. igloochic- Well, right now there IS no office. That is all part of a gigantically long master bedroom. It's stupid space in my opinion. I work at home and NEED an office, so right now my desk is set up there, open to the bedroom. I HATE it. Hate the computer lights and hum, hate seeing the piles and cords. I want my bedroom to be a calm place to escape and unwind. This house is teeny, so there is NO other place for my office to go. (Plus, we think being able to claim 3BR is a plus for resale. Target market will either be a young family or retired couple. Either way it seems like 2 normal-sized bedrooms and a small nursery or home office is a desireable combo. Honestly, there's no other place in the house where a home office could go....) weedyacres- I'll play around with that but my DH is going to be mad. We're having a heck of a bad year, renovation-wise. We started the kitchen/LR/DR renovation in April and soon discovered some very major drainage problems. We'd hoped to complete the exterior renovations this fall but the money we had to spend on the stupid drainage problems has left us utterly broke. Then DH got temporarily furloughed and I am not working either, and both cars are dying. It's baaaaad. BUT we HAVE to address this bathroom this month because it is -quite literally- making me sick. There is a huge mold problem in there. It's sealed off with painters tape right now because I was so sick from it. DH is going to have to cut a hole in the exterior wall, go in there and start gutting it until he finds the source of the mold (we suspect it is in the insulation, possibly the sheathing and studs, hope not!!). ANYWAY. It is not the best scenario to start a renovation. The kitchen's still not done either. And we're out of money. So we're leery of making too many changes. Even doing it all ourselves, having to reframe and redrywall and trim out all those extra walls is sure to add at least a grand, don't you think? Plus, our Washer & dryer are currently in the north closet...... Comments (3)You should have enough space to have a tub and a shower, depending on the size of vanities, placement of doors, whether you need a toilet enclosure and where the existing plumbing is located. It may be tight, esp. if you want a decent sized shower. Moving the toilet is a PITA. The more plumbing you keep in its original spot, the cheaper it will be. For a quick and dirty (and free) mock up you can use the arrange-a-room tool at BHG. First you specify your room size (unfortunately, their minimum room size is 8 feet by 8 feet, so you'll have to specify a room size of 11 by 8 and ignore one foot of it). Then you pick from among a variety of plumbing fixtures (look in furniture and select bathroom. You'll find toilets, sinks, vanities, corner and regular showers and tubs, etc.). You can also add windows and doors (look in architectural items) You can rotate all of the fixtures, specify sizes, etc. by clicking on info once you drag the fixtures into the room. The program allows you to save, retrieve and print out up to 25 designs. Nothing too sophisticated, but it's easy and it does the trick. Is it just the "thought" of that magificent soak we all wish for but never take that puts in our minds that we must have the tub?" Ditto with all the chef kitchens with professional ranges. In my area, hardly anybody cooks in their chef kitchen because everybody is too busy. 7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoOur master bath is galley style, with a freestanding tub directly across from the shower. The tub isn't in yet and I think we'll have a bit more of a walkway than you will but it seems like there will be plenty of room.
We did choose a narrower rectangular tub instead of the wider oval tub I originally wanted, in order to have more space.
Here are our plans, although we tweaked a few measurements (we took a few inches from the bathroom to make the closet wider and a few inches from the shower to make the linen closet wider). All the walls and shower are installed and the design has worked out really well so far.

7 years agolast modified: 7 years agoYes, enduring is correct - it's 16.8' x 13.1' not including the thickness of the walls.
We ended up stealing a few inches from the bathroom to widen the master closet so after drywall we ended up with a 48" space between the front of the vanity and the water/linen closets and about 38" between the top edge of the tub and the outside of the shower curb.
Here's the shower I ordered from Costco online - it's the Bart tub and 69" x 32".

7 years agoI"m short on time, but wanted to post something that's been swirling in my brain. I think walk in closets are lovely if you have the space, but I just don't think you have the space; I'm pretty confident that the minimum recommended width of a closet is 5'.
How about a walk- through closet to your bathroom? My guesstimate is that you could have 6' wide, reach in closets on either side of a 42" hallway.
I've seen lots of pictures with a beautiful tub centered under a window and flanked by vanities, so I appreciate that look might be a priority to you. I just moved all that over to the other window.
I tucked the toilet and shower around the corner. Depending on the location of the window, you might be able to have a pocket door, but if not, a wall would add a lot of privacy (avoid seeing the reflection of someone on the toilet from the entrance or the rest of the bathroom.)
Anyhoo. Here's a rough drawing. If aging in place is a concern, I'd put the shower and toilet on the exterior or bedroom wall, so you have the option of creating a quicker route to the toilet (through the closet wall) in the future.
