Reveal: small bath with large format "marblelain" tile
Comments (43)Sorry, I don't know off hand what the grout is. It is my daughters bathroom and I can see if the contractor left some grout at their house when I go there tomorrow to watch my granddaughter and let you know. I do know that the shower valve and tub spout are not off center in the tile so it is just the angle of the picture. The contractor who was also the tile man was an absolute perfectionist and wouldn't allow anything to be "off". He has since done my son's bathroom and I will be using him in the future for my hall bath remodel. I wish everyone could have a contractor like him....See Morelarge format marble basketweave
Comments (5)Mosaics are more expensive than field tiles because of the extra cutting, finishing and matting. Smaller mosaics *can* be cheaper than larger mosaics because they are most often cut from the waste generated from fabricating 12"x12" dimensional stone tiles. You get more pieces out of the waste from smaller tesserae. You will find that it can be less expensive to buy 12"x12" (most common size and so the cheapest to buy) tiles of the stone you are considering and cut the mosaic pieces yourself? Even if you have your installer cut all of the pieces, you can still sometimes save money over buying the mosaic pre-assembled AND you'll have a very unique installation. Here are two examples of when I've been asked to make my own tiles to suite the customer's design. This first was a French limestone from Ann Sacks which had been discontinued after the tile for the house's flooring have been purchased. This fireplace was an afterthought and the client wanted "something" which tied the fireplace into the flooring. I never throw away my cutting waste until after the job's wrapped up so I went through the piles and sorted by colors. Then I looked at the dimensions I had to work with and pitched this concept. The client loved it and I was able to give her what she wanted and we didn't have to spend anything on additional tile. This next one is a curbless walk-in shower I built recently where the designer wanted to use a combination of 12"x12" tiles and 3.75"x3.75" tiles of the same material, but the smaller tiles weren't available in this stone. For this shower I cut a bit over 1,200 3.75"x3.75" tiles, which only took me a day to accomplish. Again, a unique product and considerable savings as similar stone in the dimension the designer wanted were more expensive. Best of luck, Shaughnn...See MoreAnyone use thin porcelain large-format slabs on walls?
Comments (153)Everyone is asking for a porcelain slab fabricator close to where they live. What I did was search on Houzz to find local contractors with porcelain slab installations. Then viewing work that they did a few years ago for any cracking particularly around the sink faucets. I did not have good experiences asking the material vendor for contractors for other projects I have done....See MoreLarge marble tile (6x12) backsplash
Comments (11)That kitchen has always been one of my favorites. I think it's on the Sub Zero website and I've seen it called "Hot Chocolate". I LOVE the way they did those tiles. Just wondering if some of the effect might be lost if it's just behind the range. I don't know the answer to that, just something to think about. Maybe if you draw out in pencil the 6X12 shape you'll get a better feel. I hope you go for it. I'm considering it for my backsplash!! I love "oversized" elements and my range wall has no upper cabs on it. Just flanked by 2 windows....See MoreWinnie S
