large format marble basketweave

Hi everyone,

I recently saw some larger than usual basketweave tiles in marble in a house I was showing. I asked for the tile place and went there yesterday. They have such a lovely look in the larger size and I would love to use them. The only problem is they are more than double what I can get the normal size basketweave for. I may go for it anyway because ours will be for the middle of a faux rug in our half bath, so won't need a lot, but it still bothers me that they are so much more.

Does anyone know anywhere else I can get them? If you know prices, that would be a great help.

Mosaics are more expensive than field tiles because of the extra cutting, finishing and matting. Smaller mosaics *can* be cheaper than larger mosaics because they are most often cut from the waste generated from fabricating 12"x12" dimensional stone tiles. You get more pieces out of the waste from smaller tesserae.
You will find that it can be less expensive to buy 12"x12" (most common size and so the cheapest to buy) tiles of the stone you are considering and cut the mosaic pieces yourself? Even if you have your installer cut all of the pieces, you can still sometimes save money over buying the mosaic pre-assembled AND you'll have a very unique installation.
Here are two examples of when I've been asked to make my own tiles to suite the customer's design.
This first was a French limestone from Ann Sacks which had been discontinued after the tile for the house's flooring have been purchased. This fireplace was an afterthought and the client wanted "something" which tied the fireplace into the flooring. I never throw away my cutting waste until after the job's wrapped up so I went through the piles and sorted by colors. Then I looked at the dimensions I had to work with and pitched this concept. The client loved it and I was able to give her what she wanted and we didn't have to spend anything on additional tile.

This next one is a curbless walk-in shower I built recently where the designer wanted to use a combination of 12"x12" tiles and 3.75"x3.75" tiles of the same material, but the smaller tiles weren't available in this stone. For this shower I cut a bit over 1,200 3.75"x3.75" tiles, which only took me a day to accomplish. Again, a unique product and considerable savings as similar stone in the dimension the designer wanted were more expensive.

Thanks for the advice but I think I'd end up paying much more in labor than the price difference of buying pre-made large instead of small.
I am just hoping to either find the mfr or one who makes something close enough and charges a reasonable price.
I think the tiles I saw were 2x4 instead of the more common 1x2 used in most basketweave mosaics.

White ceramics or porcelains are not the easiest thing to find because white is difficult to get "white". It's worse than the 10,000 posts a year in the DÃÂ©cor Forum asking about the "perfect" white. Most tiles actually aren't all that white when you objectively judge them against a white balance scale, especially the red clay based ones. White glazes vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. And the whitest white tiles are the most expensive because of that difficulty. The whitest white tiles are usually a white bodied porcelain, with an expensive white glaze for the top surface. "Plain" is also more difficult to achieve than a tile with a little bit of a swirl or movement to the color, or texture to the finish. A plain glossy tile has to be absolutely perfectly smooth, or you notice it. Simple IS usually the hardest thing to create in any design, because of the much tighter tolerances and no trims to fall back on. You're asking for a double whammy, truly white and plain,

And the type of subfloor you are sitting on. Adding poured concrete onto a wooden subfloor isn't a lot of fun. And then you get to discover the joys of etching and staining that occurs with concrete. It is as bad as MARBLE. Personally I would look for a HIGH END porcelain tile ($10 - $15/sf) to get the look you want. Porcelain will not have the staining/etching/MAINTENANCE issues like concrete. Yes. Concrete has maintenance = same amount of money/time/effort as marble.

Who's installing? I installed my own porcelain 12x24 and it was very difficult for me. I have the dreaded lipage. If you are going to have a pro install, make sure they know what they are in for. I had lots of help from some old GW posters. Couldn't have done it without their help. But I would never recommend laying anything larger than 12x12 for novice tilers, after my experience. Now as far as color. I just say what ever you like. Things tend to be very light these days. But the picture you show is beautiful. I couldn't get the link to open so I don't know the material, thinking it might be marble due to your comment about concrete. If it is marble, it does absorb water. and many people have had nightmares with shower pans, tiled with marble. But those issues seem to be a poorly built base. Then the water doesn't drain under the tiles, to the drain, and causes constant wet look, and staining, especially light marble. I would recommend porcelain for all parts of the shower. I also would recommend to have a solid surface base that is pre slopped if you are DIYing it. I used a 3x5' Kohler cast iron base and have been very happy with it. I don't have to worry about the function of the drainage. I went with the cast iron, cause I was DIYing my shower and I didn't want to tackle the shower base slope construction. If I had a fail, it would be on me and I'd have to take it out.

@Patricia Colwell most likely the niche will be on the right hand wall in the big shower or we will keep the low ledge so all the items are not directly displayed when looking into the room. the model has a super high ledge, ours is about the height of a standard tub edge. for the stall upstairs shower we arent set which wall. its a metal framed home so its where ever one could fit and if it cant we may do a stack of a few corner shelves next to the facet and shower head. also that smaller shower is in a side 'hall' so when you look into the bathroom its to the side. here is a Pic of the layout in the model. you don't see in the shower unless you are using the toilet or getting in it. I hate caddies cause they never stay together or end up rusting. plus i dont want more things taking up room in the shower itself.

Ah! I imagined by "larger basketweave" that you were wanting to use a 4"x8" basketweave pattern or something similar.

shaughnn , I love the shower wall with the 3x boarder and the larger diagonal tile. I normally don't gravitate towards the diagonal wall tiles, but the mix you've created is really nice. I like the differing sizes and layout, while staying with the same color. Very visually interesting.
