Pictures 1-2 are keeping the standard double oven while adding microwave to base cabinets.

Picture 3 is on the wall microwave with single oven

Picture 4 is double oven with the ability to use microwave on the top/first oven.

we really like it but we are kind of near our budget so we're trying to figure out if adding the microwave to the base cabinets. Looks weird. From a functional standpoint it's not very ideal but we could live with it. It would save us $1600 vs getting option 4.

I hope your electric cooktop is induction. Like a Bosch 800. The alternative is the slowest responding, hardest to clean, worst performing cooktop available. One oven with micro or many choose a combi steam oven instead of a micro at that location.

We had choice for electric induction (~$1000 upgrade) but we stuck with the GE Black cooktop with built in touch controls.

Think about how you cook. Do you need two ovens often, or just for holidays and occasional entertaining?

If you won't use it often go for the oven/microwave but pass on the combo. It is easier to replace if they are separate units.

edited to add: I agree that induction is the way to go. If I didn't have gas I would be putting an induction in my reno.

You should seriously consider switching to induction you will not regret it!

I would keep the double ovens and get a countertop microwave. We have had two countertop microwaves crump out in the eleven years since we did our kitchen with two ovens that are stil going strong. To me, microwaves are consumable and the new ones never fit the slots created for the old ones.

Will your builder let you do this?

For $300 we bought a large GE tabletop mw. Our contractor made an adjustment to the shelf to accommodate it. There is enough space surrounding the mw to allow for airflow, and for heat to escape.

I agree with @Sherry Brighton about evaluating how you cook. First decide how often you would use 2 ovens. If you decide the 2 ovens would be useful, then do the trade off of cabinet space versus microwave location. An under-counter microwave means you basically lose a cabinet. Under-cabinet microwaves are polarizing, there are multiple threads on this site that discuss them. Some people love them, some not so much. They are also more expensive than countertop models.

I also agree that if you decide on one oven, it makes more sense to have the microwave and oven separate so that you don't have to replace the whole thing if only one breaks.

Regarding option 1, I wouldn't discount the microwave on the counter as a cost savings (especially as a trade off for an induction cooktop). I had a house where the microwave was on the counter, in a corner that would be dead space anyhow, and it worked out just fine functionally..

The cooktop you're getting heats the glass to 750* to then heat the pan. Anything on there is baked on the glass and pan bottom with that high temp. It doesn't clean off easily. Single edged razor blades are a necessary tool. Induction causes the pan to heat up leaving the glass surface only warm. You can clean it with a paper towel and spray of cleaner in one swipe. Induction allows you to instantly change and control the heat setting. The GE radiant takes a long time to heat up the glass, then the pan and changes take a long time. This makes cooking a very frustrating procedure. . . .You should go to an appliance center or the design center and test the two methods. You will not choose radiant if you try it ahead of time. . . .No one on these forums has ever recommended radiant as a cooking choice.

I agree about getting the cheapest microwave option. You have plenty of countertop. Built in is so expensive to replace and I am on my 3rd microwave and have never needed a new oven in 20 years.

You might consider getting a GE Twin Flex oven: a double oven that fits in the space of a single oven. I got one last spring & had a shelf & outlet added above it to put a countertop microwave there. Very happy with both the ovens & the Panasonic microwave. I opted not to get a trim kit for the microwave.

We did option 1 and I don't regret it at all. We have a small countertop microwave that is in a regular upper cabinet with a smaller door - picture below which is much easier than explaining! (Just avert your eyes from any unfinished trim bits you see!)

This is the first time I've ever had double ovens and I am still surprised at how often I use them - it's so much easier to plan meals that have two different oven temp needs. It feels positively luxurious to be able to have several different things going in the oven at once!

Also--before we renovated, our kitchen had a fancy Kitchenaid combination convection microwave/oven like in your option 4. We had so much trouble out of that thing. The microwave had to be repaired a couple times, and the oven electrics would freak out and stop working every single holiday we hosted! We kept them both limping along, but since they were attached, we would have had to replace both appliances if one of them totally broke.
