bad connection between original house and addition

Hello! Our home was built in 1920 and added on to in 1959. The addition is a family room on the main floor and a master bedroom on second floor. The addition was connected to the original house, only on the first floor. The impact of this is that to get from the kid bedrooms on original 2nd floor to the master, you go down one set of stairs, Walk through the house to the addition and go up a spiral staircase.
This is terrible for many reasons. Connecting on the 2nd floor is challenged by two different rooflines. We really need to connect on the second floor but are stymied on how to handle it. One more thing, they are not aligned perfectly. They are offset by a couple feet. Photos are attached. Any thoughts?
