I really need help. I don't know what to do.
Comments (1)Lawns are a lot easier than you are being told. There are two extremely popular grasses in the south. One is bermuda and the other is St Augustine. Bermuda is a fine bladed grass which requires extra care every week while St Augustine grass is a coarse bladed grass. There are two kinds of bermuda: one is a hybrid which only slightly resembles the "wild" varieties, and the other is common bermuda which is started from seed. This bermuda seed is the only grass seed that makes sense in the south. If you mix the two kinds of bermuda, it will always and forever look weedy. The two different kinds of grass just look different. The hybrid looks really nice most of the time. The common looks so-so most of the time unless you really spend a lot of time and money on it. Really both require a lot of care when compared with St Augustine. Bermuda is a FULL SUN type of grass. If it is in the shade of a building, fence, or shrubbery/trees, it will thin out and look poor. Bermuda can go dormant in the winter and when it does not get regular water. St Augustine comes in many varieties. The common variety is rarely seen anymore. The others are all hybrids with different degrees of tolerance for shade, disease, and drought. St Augustine is the only grass in the south that can tolerate much shade, and it can tolerate a lot. In full sun it becomes very dense and very resistant to weeds. The Floratam variety works best in bright sun but will be a little thin in deep shade. When selecting St Augustine what matters most is what's available in your neighborhood. If you find some of a certain variety, please write back and we can explain the pros and cons for the ones you can get. One interesting thing about St Augustine is that you can care for it such that it will wipe out other grasses. All it takes is proper water, mowing, and fertilizer. The difference between proper care for bermuda and St Augustine is slight but important if you want one or the other. If you start with just a few pieces of St Augustine, with proper care it can cover a yard in 2 years. If you want instant lawn, this won't work, but if you are patient, it will work. In fact I just bought a new home with no grass and will be doing the same thing. Sorry I'm being called to dinner. There's more to say, but you might have some more questions....See MoreWhen they look good, they really look good
Comments (17)I know that for many of you, the white centers grow beautifully. So do the white margins. However, those are the ones I have the most difficulty growing. Every now and then an exception, for a couple of weeks maybe, then downhill from there. So I got Patriot and Minuteman before I knew they would not do much here. I got Ann Kulpa. I got White Elephant and Eskimo Pie. Surprisingly, White Elephant (a 2011 purchase) does fine before it turns green about mid June. I lost my 2010 purchase Eskimo Pie, it dwindled to nothing, and I consoled myself with Hudson Bay. It is doing nicely. So are Pathfinder and its offspring Half & Half. Where I find solace is with the golds, and the greens--which includes all the blues which turn to green. When blue wax does not WASH off, but melts instead, the leaves wind up glossy and fairly smooth. You'd have a hard time identifying some of mine which you'd recognize if they were blue and matte finished....See MoreHow do I make this Stickley piece look good in this house?
Comments (28)Hi repainting, Could you help out another william morris addict? I'd love to buy direct as you did, but I can't figure out how. First I went to the Sanderson site, which led me to the Morris and co. subsite, which, on the FAQ regarding direct orders: "All orders are referred to our Specialist retailers, for more information please visit the "Where To Buy" section on our website for a full list." Perhaps you ordered from a UK retailer with a very low markup? All I can find online are retailers like historic style and pendleton woodworks. Let's see, I'd like to get 4 yards of autumn flowers velvet for a chair I'm recovering; even with conversion, it's $250/yd from historic style. I've got to believe there's a little bit of extra markup in that price! Now, I know retailers have to make a buck, but I guess at these rates I'd rather they make it off someone else. So any info. you have about what you did would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise it's off to Joann during a 50% off home decorating fabrics sale to find a compromise. I can get a velvet at less than 1/10th of the price from them. I'd pay triple or quadruple for a morris pattern, but tenfold more? At those rates, I'd be better off making my own morris stencil and figuring out how to screenprint on plain fabric. Or something. tia, Alex...See MoreSOS! MY NEW WHITE BLINDS DON’T LOOK GOOD. Comments (30)The window is on the larger end and the blinds that were previously there were two separate blinds on one valance so I stuck with that. As for the TV, I brought this to my boyfriend’s attention and he says he usually watches TV with his seat reclined so he mounted the TV to accommodate that. I don’t watch TV often and when I do it hasn’t bothered me but now that it’s been brought to my attention, I can see that it looks awkward...See More- 2 years ago
