Comments (99)No worries, Amy, it's okay if you rant at the internet or me even. haha! Maybe Epsom salt is less expensive? I try not to concern myself too much with what other people are doing if it's working for them. This guy was very clear with his talk about how garden soil has enough calcium, but it's a watering issue and the plants inability to take in the mineral. He said "it's the only time I ever use Epsom in the garden"...referring to container tomatoes and lacking nutrients in the container potting mix. My plants made it through the insane wind. We didn't get a drop of rain and we could use some pretty badly. It's possible we'll put out the SG tomatoes tomorrow. After that, I'll know exactly what I have to share. I suspect no one here will need them. We all have too many already. The first of the red periwinkles have blossoms now. They look pretty red! My Mom will be pleased. I woke up to sadness. Tom got up before me, showered and went for donuts. I got up and did my usual thing...go to the utility room, turn on the turtle light and feed her. Checked the dogs water (and noticed a struggling crane fly and pulled it out of the water bowl so it could live), scooped up a bowl of food for Kane. I always feed him first. Looked over to him and he was just lying there. Josi was being very quiet and still. He died last night/early this morning. Tom said he heard him bark once around 5 am. And not again. (sometimes if they hear something outside, they'll bark) He was fine last night. I took him out around 11. He ate and drank yesterday. Had a treat when he came in at 11. I'm so confused about what happened. Maybe a heart attack? He was 11. My daughter and her husband are about to put their house up for sale, so we went to their house to help them with a few things today. The peppers have outgrown their stunted state and are looking good. I should have plenty now. Phew!...See MoreAugust 2021 Week 1
Comments (40)Hi friends. Larry--we had just one sunflower come up at Lincoln this year. And like yours, it has 5-7 blooms on it. I realized we had NO room to plant any there this year, so we laughed to see the one come up. But I DID plant one of the 4x12 beds with nothing but dwarf sunflowers. Since I got everything planted so late, those are just now getting ready to bloom--it should be a blast! The snake gourds are so much fun--but. But but what does one do with them? I'm researching; haven't come up with a fun idea yet. From the looks of things, I'd say we're going to have more melons than any other vegetable. I was waiting to see the green beans sprouting and finally realize I didn't plant any! I'm not sure there will be any way to ensure that Garry will wear a face mask even if he does go in for a sleep study, Amy. I'm going to guess it would be an exercise in futility. And I forgot to bring it up at his appointment yesterday. We got pneumonia shots. I didn't even know pneumonia shots were a possibility. Trying to think what else she was trying to sell us on. lol I think a couple of you said your heavenly blue morning glories had been blooming. Lori D noted today on FB that hers were just beginning to. The first year I tried to grow them here, they didn't begin to bloom until the end of September and then it froze. I said to heck with that. But last year, they just volunteered at the school--birds must have brought them in? There aren't any flower gardens anywhere near the school. They were so pretty--I certainly hope that's what's vining over the trellis. I think if it were Grandpa Ott's they would have begun blooming quite some times ago. We'll see. I'll have to tell John to let me know as soon as the sunflowers and MGs begin blooming. He gets as enthused as I do....See MoreAugust 2021 Week 5?
Comments (38)For those of you whose yards and gardens have been decimated by grasshoppers (like mine have been), George posted this on FB. Hilarious. Great fun--I can see we're going to have to buy the proper game equipments. https://seedsavingnetwork.proboards.com/thread/586/grasshoppers?fbclid=IwAR1S4tBw3TEJeqPiPkrbTHu_T7iNB7LfT4JtTN8ZnAlvhWc7L-WRYgS_uFY I feel like I've been duped. I thought hip surgery was supposed to make one feel good as new. Apparently not. Good as new if you do this and this and don't do that or that. Amy helped clue me in. Doctor conned me. (Not that I have any options--he was just trying to paint it in the rosiest light.) Still like the doctor and would recommend him to anyone with knee or hip problems. Maybe shoulder, too. Crazy snake gourds. By the time they turn red they're no good to anyone, unless someone can think of a cool use for them. We can't, but the kids sure liked seeing them....See MoreSeptember 2021, Week 2

He went searching this morning and came back with this, suggesting it may have been this little horn, not a bell. How funny! I think it will work fine. It's awfully noisy--I don't think he can possibly not hear it! Speaking of naps, I just had THE nicest nap! It was a doozy! I also should check up on nolo bait. Grasshoppers STINK. Sure it was your keyboard, Amy? I've been having problems with Facebook--commenting on others' posts. I suppose I should try to train Garry on the cell phone. It's certainly not something he'd like training on. . . on the other hand, he needs to train me on how to sit down and read a good magazine or book straight through. I so admire him for that. Recently I got hard copy subscriptions to Nat'l Geographic and Smithsonian. He devours both as soon as they come. I had also ordered The Afghanistan Papers a few weeks ago and by gosh, he has sat down and read through that entire thing, as well. I'm a little jealous. Suzanne came over last night about 7 and stayed until 9 or so. Wow--I never have company that stays so long. SO fun to catch up. We sat in the quilting/everything room so as not to bother Garry. She remarked on how different the energy vibes were in that room. Wow--that really resonated--I'm sure that's true--for sure it's nothing like the rest of the house. No way for me to ever get bored in there! I think I may embark on sorting seeds there--probably as close to gardening as I'll get in the next few weeks! Garry and I are encountering a behavioral issue with Tiny. I remember Dawn telling us to not forget who's in charge, re cats. Seems Tiny is taking us to school in that department. I suspect it comes from the fact that neither of us has been outside gardening this past month. I'm a little embarrassed even bringing it up. This is where it comes from: these 3 cats are much beloved by both of us. Though I know Danny was/is right, that cats need to be kept inside, that ship had sailed with these 3/barn door had been openined--impossible to get the "horses" back in. And so every morning we go through this rigamarole whereby cats have to go out, then in; then out; then in. Tom and Jerry, not so bad. But Tiny has discovered (created?) a new game. He can scratch on the front livingroom window screeb. Garry goes to the door to let him in. Works great. NOW he has upped the game. Now he scratches on the screen, Garry goes to let him in and he backs off. No thanks, he says, and if GDW goes out to get him, he dashes off. So GDW comes back in, sits down. Tiny is right back at it, scratching the screen. This morning, took him oh, 5 minutes until he began meowing loudly to get back out. This has now obviously turned into some kind of game for him. I scolded him--couple times ago I threw my grabber stick at him. Now I've cme up with new idea. Get the water spray bottle. Told GDW to show up at the door with it and if Tiny backs off to spray it at him. We need one of you to show up as a cat specialist doctor. Other issue is my appetite. We thought my appetite has just shrunk for now . Now I realize it's not that--it's that I don't have an appetite at all! I was so excited about the big juicy burger I ordered from the Marina, and by the time I finished the 3rd or 4th bite, had no interest whatsoever. Do any of the rest of you have similar after-surgery issues with appetites? Okay. . . . off to my exciting life!...See Moreslowpoke_gardener
