Triplet girls bathroom remodel

We have 14 year old triplet girls and we are looking to remodel their bathroom. We have one sink now. Trying to decide to put in 2 sinks or a large trough sink. I know I need counter space for sure. Also, do I need a tub/shower or do I convert to a large walk in shower? Would just a shower and no tub decrease the resale value??

If you provide a little more info I think you’ll get more advice.

How many beds/baths does house have?

Is there another tub in the house?

How long do you think you’ll live there?

Please post a drawing with measurenents and some pictures of the bathroom.

Post some pics. If counter space is an issue (I can imagine it is with three 14-year old girls lol) then a trough sink will steal a lot of counter space. I’d stick with 2 sinks and lots of drawers.

thanks mrslovett...desiretoinspire is great. have been downloading pics from it for the last hour and a half (oops)... since i posted a few weeks ago we've narrowed down choices a bit. we're going w/ polished white shimmery marble tiles (i think they're called crystal white): 5/8" square on the floor and probably 12" on tub wall (to avoid grout lines, though the little tiles seem more shimmery somehow). PAint will be some ice cream parlor pink or aqua blue in all likelihood. will take your advice about mirrors, furniture and hand shower. any other ideas or inspiration pics always welcome.

wowed, I agree with your response, and it's interesting to me. I would want at least sound, if not visual, separation, between a lavatory/dressing area and a bedroom. It's interesting to compare the bedroom/lavatory area/toilet and bath area layers to a palace set up: the anteroom, the throne room (no pun intended) and then private quarters. In the same way, access and function are layered. I think most users would agree this sort of layering is a good thing. Contrast this to the evolution of design of the kitchen/dining/family room area of a house. For me, sound separation of activities (eg., tv watching vs. a conversation in a dining room, or relaxing in the family room without the din of dish stacking) or visual separation (chatting with guests in the dining room while not worrying about how the busy food prep area looks) or even olfactory separation (reading a book in the family room while onions are sliced and sauteed in the kitchen). The grand, open flowing floorplan for these areas is popular, but for me, I prefer a little segregation, especially as the number of users and potential simultaneous uses goes up. Seems to me, as the average household size has shrunk and more people are living in a house of only 2 or 3 people, sure, the open floor plan can work. But for now at least, I want a little bit of separation of activities, and I like my "antiquated" floor plan, with separate kitchen, dining room, family room (tv) and living room (piano). A tv and piano in the same room would be a nuisance for us. So I guess on a more micro level, I'm looking to separate activities in the bathroom. Personally, I don’t see any problem with having a walk in closet off of master bath. In fact, I like the idea... super convenient. As long as it is within your area’s building code guidelines, I don’t see why it would be an issue, or why you would feel you need validation for this idea (?). People take entire rooms of their existing houses to convert to custom closets, and most folks don’t view that as being odd. I don’t view it as being odd either, btw; and even if I did view it as being odd, it wouldn’t really be my business - since it’s not my house. As far as ‘’making things easier‘’ for your husband goes, though - I hope these extra modifications do work the way you intend, and that he doesn't just forego the closet - and throw his stuff on the bathroom floor!

@anj_p this is a remodel and im trying not to go too crazy otherwise i love your idea of flipping the master/kids wings! good point on toilet - existing walls are all plaster and incredibly soundproof but this new one wont be so going to make sure to raise that question! im torn on reach in closet - its what they have now, but it feels like being able to shut a door would be nice? were also used to using dressers so maybe a nice furniture piece could be a ckmpromise? going to think about that! totally agree on master bath and Im frustrated our architect hasnt suggested it. the window makes a large shower there awkward but we dont hse a tub! thanks for taking the time tk look and give advice!

Two sinks with three girls makes no sense. Does one girl "not get a sink"? What matters more than access to water is storage. Be sure each girl has at least one good-sized drawer for storage at the sink -- if you don't provide drawer storage, the cabinet top will always be cluttered.

My girls never used the bathroom at the same time anyway, even though they had two sinks -- but they loved that they each had three drawers + a walk-in linen closet.

I don't get the point of trough sinks, especially if it comes at the cost of counter space, which you already said was a "for sure".

Also, do I need a tub/shower or do I convert to a large walk in shower? Would just a shower and no tub decrease the resale value??

When our old tub decided to descend into the crawl space, I gave my daughters the choice: replace the tub or go with a walk-in shower? They chose shower. Since we have a tub in our other bathroom, I don't think it's a problem. The shower we put in is the same size as a tub, and it's nice -- the one thing I wish we'd done differently: we put in only a 12x12 niche, and it's not nearly enough. I wish we'd gone with multiples or an extra-wide niche.

No tub would probably decrease unless you have another bathroom with another tub. Not in the master.
I agree to do two separate sinks.
But I’d probably do one outside the bathroom/ toilet area and one inside. If there’s enough space.
Can you take pictures of the space so we can get a feel for it?

I’ll preface this by saying that obviously I don’t know about your house dynamics, but if I had triplet daughters age 14, I wouldn‘t spend massive amounts of money remodeling their bathroom because in 4 years or so I would expect them to be GONE. Some money to make their bathroom better, sure. But not lots.

Unless money is no object, of course.

But littlebug, lots of people expected their college kids and young working adults to be gone for the last 15 months ... some colleges and businesses haven't opened up for in person classes and work yet!

Not enough info to suggest what should be done.
