front door too hard to open---ideas?
Comments (12)toomuch- It sounds like that's true, although I'm a little surprised that it's in two places. I once had a door that stuck at the bottom because the threshold was loose and it bowed up in the middle. Instead of planing that door, I was able to flatten the threshold out with a couple of screws. If that's not an option, get your plane out. Make sure the planing iron is sharp, and take the smallest slices you can. It helps to bevel the edges of the door a little first so that you don't rip out veneer from the face of the door when you plane across the top or bottom. It might not take much planing to free the door up. I'd start with the top and get that fixed, because you won't have to take the door off to deal with that rub. Then, once you think the top edge is taken care of, take the door off, plane some, put it back, and repeat until it's free. Good luck....See MoreReplacing stripping on front door w/ wood trim (and small slit).
Comments (7)I ended up using the nail on version of the perma foam weatherstripping that you linked above after trying several different things. Worked well and was easy. https://www.amazon.com/AM-Conservation-Group-KC600W-84-Weatherstrip/dp/B008BR9TBU/ref=pd_sbs_60_t_1/132-1711087-1630542?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B008BR9TBU&pd_rd_r=67bdf90b-3321-43b6-a523-e467fd1b66f1&pd_rd_w=YJcBL&pd_rd_wg=sokVL&pf_rd_p=5cfcfe89-300f-47d2-b1ad-a4e27203a02a&pf_rd_r=1JAZMHV3RJ26XZ2PC06N&psc=1&refRID=1JAZMHV3RJ26XZ2PC06N also https://www.swisco.com/Foam-Seal-Nail-Flange/pd/Prime-Door-Weather-Stripping/58-169 That was 2-3 years ago; the one from Amazon is the only one that I could find at that time....See MoreHow to dress up front door/add shelter/small porch?
Comments (13)Hi- I think it would be very nice if you could have a covered porch on one side of your house, or even running the length of the entire front of your house. Who cares if it is not "the period" of your house? I don't think your house is some period masterpiece whose value will be lowered by the addition of the porch. Only you can decide if you have the money to pay for that sort of project, and if the months out of the year that you can sit outside with a cuppa and a book nad/or with a neighbor make it worth it to you to spend the money. Note, I don't even mention re-sale value. Because what is important is the pleasure it will give you, that is number one. (I am assuming that building a porch won't detract from the house's value.) Please be sure to use an experienced contractor, get three bids, etc. You can have one side with a porch swing if you like that, or a couple of rocking chairs and foot stools, and the other side with a table and chairs and a bar cart/tea cart. From the top you can hang several bushy hanging plants. If you do this sort of porch, you don't need a portico as the door will be covered by the porch....See Moregarage door too small
Comments (10)I think it looks fine, specially as it means that your front door is placed higher and visually more important than the garage door. An 8 ft high garage door is fine ... I can get my tall suv with a cargo box under an 8 ft tall door. My issue would be the width of your garage door and width of the garage itself, specially if you actually plan to park 2 larger sized cars/suv and store things in there, but you didn't seem to have many options to change/increase that part of the design....See MoreHU-968198033
