garage door too small

We’re completely renovating our house and raising the ceiling height from 8’ to 9’. Our garage (are the front of the house is lower as it doesn’t have a crawl space so the ceiling in there will be about 11’. We had a rendering done when the plans were finalized and all looked ok, but now after seeing the actual house it looks like a standard 8’ garage door will be teeny given all of the space above. Do you think a 9’ door would be a better look? I’m attaching the rendering we had done initially and our house as of today.

I think a 9' tall garage door will give you the look of a big garage door with a big space above it. Ask the person that designed the renovation for options of breaking up the expanse of wall above the garage door. Perhaps a window or wall finish change or gingerbread or lower the garage's roof or . . . .

After seeing it today I thought a window would look nice but it’s too late. We would have to go back through engineering.

if set properly, it will never damage it. the only advantage the 3/4hp has over a 1/2hp is it MAY open/close the door a second quicker. i recently replaced one of my openers, and after much discussion with folks in the know i just put a 1/2 back in. the new 1/2hp opens/closes slightly quicker than my other old one of the same model. the only time you could damage the door would be if you set the up/down force too high and the door hung on something. even then it would more likely cause damage to the opener than the door, IF it is installed properly in all other aspects.

We did that at one of our homes with a similar layout....we made a small platform inside the garage next to the door. I was happy to move things out of the house, but it wasn't ideal. We have cold winters, so boots and jackets were always cold, everything was dirty/dusty from being in the garage. I put an end to it when the mice decided to make our boots their home. IKEA has some great storage benches with hanging bars/hooks above (one unit); do you live near an ikea? This is a great unit (we have one in our mudroom; I love the cubbies (we keep baskets in the cubbies to hold all the mittens, hats, snow pants, etc), and you can hang a lot, too), but it looks like it might be too wide for that space. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60381407/

my door now has to be 32"..i cant move anymore to the left because its a load bearing wall.. I could live with the triangle but NOT with a 32" door into the garage. Not on a new build. No way. (I have a 32" door into my garage & it is a PITA.) All that is required at this stage is for a new, wider header to be installed in the load bearing wall. (and possibly moving some electrical) (Absent other reasons like intersecting walls being the way, etc.) If the drawings show a 36" door, I would insist on it. IF not on the drawings, I would pay extra to change it now.

Mahogany door slab 3" too small-- can it be extended and sealed clear?

I ended up ordering a block of mahogany from a mill in the exact thickness I needed. I filled the seam with wood glue and mahogany sawdust, stained with Epifanes mahogany stain, then five coats of Epifanes gloss woodfinish, and three coats of Epifanes flat woodfinish. The seam ended up looking pretty natural, like it's just the way it was constructed, so I left it alone-- no kick plate.

I think it looks fine, specially as it means that your front door is placed higher and visually more important than the garage door. An 8 ft high garage door is fine ... I can get my tall suv with a cargo box under an 8 ft tall door.

My issue would be the width of your garage door and width of the garage itself, specially if you actually plan to park 2 larger sized cars/suv and store things in there, but you didn't seem to have many options to change/increase that part of the design.

We use the garage for a workout and laundry space and the cars stay in the driveway. We will now have attic space above for storage. Inside it’ll be fine it’s just outside I’m wondering about.

If you're using the space as an exercise room and laundry room, then why even have a garage and garage door?

Why not just finish the space off to be more suited to these uses if your cars are just going to sit outside?

Turns out we currently have a 7’ door and the plans call for an 8’. After looking at the house I do think it’ll be fine.
