3-way switch problem.

Got a situation where the power enters at the light box. I have wired it up as shown below, the only difference is that the wires at the light hit that light and also connect to a second light via wire splitters (so they both turn on/off together). When I power the circuit on, the lights are on all the time and I can't turn them off. I swapped the top red and bottom black (same side) wires on switch 1 and now switch 1 works but switch 2 does nothing. I tried reversing the wires on switch 2 but it still didn't do anything but switch 1 still worked. I'm perplexed. This is in a kitchen so I have switches on both ends of the long counter. I appreciate any help.
