Using Firewood for your Smoker Q
Comments (6)I usually buy various wood CHUNKS not chips of Mesquite, Hickory, Cherry, Apple woods. Many years ago when I was in Southern California I was able to get Grape Vine cuttings that was really nice for flavor also. About the only trees we have near us is Pine which is unusable for smoking. But bags of wood Chunks last quite awhile and it is nice to have the selection of various flavors, plus the wood is nicely dried and just the right size. I buy a Lump Charcoal from our local grocery store that is made for them by a place called "Nature's Grilling" it is a perfect blend of good hardwoods. "Ebony, Limoncillo, Tenaza, Hueso de tigre, Mezquite" woods in nice large lumps, last a long time, starts easy, burns at up to 900 degrees and its cheap to boot, I usually get a 6.6lb bag for $4.50. I then add a few chunks of the aforementioned hardwood chunks to give off copious amounts of smoke for whatever flavor profile I am looking to get. Although the charcoal all by itself is quite nice. Here is a link that might be useful: Harris Teeter (Natures Grilling) charcoal...See MorePainting a smoker's wall
Comments (7)I hate to admit that I'm a smoker, but since I've seen the results on my walls I think I can advise you. If the wallpaper had a vinyl coating, it probably protected somewhat by the wallpaper. To be on the safe side, I would use a primer like Kilz. One trick I have learned is to run a warm mist vaporizor in a room. If you see the residue starting to bead or run, then some washing with TPS before priming will help. Just regular primer won't do. It has to be a sealer since the residue will come through primer and latex paint. Menthol cigarettes leave much less odor than non-menthol. My friends are often suprised that my house doesn't smell. My car will if it is closed up, but even then, the odor doesn't linger if I'm keeping the ashtray emptied. Menthol doesn't leave less residue, though, so it can catch people by suprise when it starts coming down the walls. Gloria...See MoreHomes Where Smokers Live - How Did You Get Rid of Odor?
Comments (38)cmarlin - if we keep them, I'll clean them, but no paint, I think they look pretty rich and even though old, I actually like them. I think I'll probably put in something like Silestone in a mocha color and it would look great. What will determine whether we keep them is if I can find a good match that will appropriately fit. kelpermaid, I think they painted in the house recently, though I'm not sure - going to try and find out. I know they've lived there for 6 years, so if they are the only people who smoked there in the last 25 years since it was built, at least 19yrs of it had no smokers - but not sure how bad the last 6 years have been. creekside - now you've TOTALLY confused me! In some cases, homes need to dry to the interior. Kilz will prevent that. So will some other products. A spot of Kilz here and there won't hurt anything. Rolling it on all the interior walls may promote mold growth. So, if you are going to use Kilz after cleaning with TSP or something like it, you can't paint everything?? I'm sure I'm not understanding something here - I'll try to read the info on the link you sent - maybe call the co. next week. Carol_from_NY -thanks, I think my cleaning list is growing by leaps and bounds. The way I'm going, I may have to put my mother on the top of the car and tell her to hold on to the luggage rack for the trip up I'm going to have so many supplies to take! Thanks for mentioning the steamer, I have one and wouldn't have remember to think about taking it. I've never heard about putting gum in for smells, that's a new one. I'll try ANYTHING to get the house to normal. Thanks for all you suggested. Well, at this time we are in limbo. Inspections turned up a few problems, two problems that could be major, one that definitely is and has to do with a foundation failure. I am trying to get the owners to agree to fix what's on the repair list I sent them - which isn't everything that needs to be repaired, I took on the cheaper and more easily aspects of it. Will know more next week whether the deal goes through or falls apart. Wish me luck!! Thanks again to all - everyone has been extremely helpful, and it's all appreciated! Oh, one more thing - my Mom was there during the inspection and told me they had a machine running to take the stink out and she thought it smelled better in there - was probably an ozone machine. My nose will decide (if we close on it, that is) THANKS!!!!...See MorePellet Smoker Tube
Comments (17)Use ice. Frozen water bottles, bag of ice in a foil pan, etc. Keeps the temp down. I use the ring mold and now place a metal rack right on top...I just found it at a yard sale and It works great being a solid block and smoke rises right up through the open center. We have been smoking and cold smoking for 25 years. Experimented at first but now just cold smoke salmon and cheese. And occasionally halved plums. Can definitely fall into the over-smoked rut. We've toned it down the past few years but we do love smoked tomatillo salsa, frozen in packets for all winter treats. I sous vide first, in portions, then freeze. I have brisket and pork chops all ready to go for weekend grilling/light smoking. Already cooked perfectly rare, then thaw overnight, ready for finishing on the grill. The mountain farm does not have a formal kitchen so I prep at home.... Our hee-haw rig using an old wood fired side box. (old pic). I can hot and cold smoke at the same time. Using ice your cheese will hold its shape and not spread out....See Moremgkmelanie
