the frugal smoker?
Comments (22)I only have one more thing to say, then I'll force myself to drop out of this discussion. Yes, smoking is a choice, and dying may be a consequence of that choice. But do they have the right to inflict on us the pain of watching them wither away with cancer, to grieve them even more knowing they could have prevented their own death, and to deal with the aftermath, such as unpaid medical bills because no one would cover them with insurance because of the illnesses caused by their choice of habits? My uncle's health insurance was cancelled due to the fact that he had reached the limit of coverage every year for three years. Of course, he couldn't get coverage anywhere else, because he had lung cancer. My aunt was left saddled with over $1,000,000 in hospital and doctor bills, and five kids to raise on her own. She had to declare bankruptcy, and her kids suffered because she could never really make enough money to support them. She finally remarried, and believe it or not, her SECOND husband died of lung cancer also. Luckily, all of her kids were away from home, but without his income, she almost lost her home and everything she owned. She's dying as we speak of emphysema from inhaling 30 years of second hand smoke. I have asthma from inhaling it from my father and from working in smoke filled offices. Do smokers have the right to inflict this on us? It may be their choice, but they leave us with no choice many times. I'm done ranting. Touchy subject for me....See MoreThe Smoker is Done, and it works!!!!

Comments (0)I've got a Brinkman Gormet Charcoal Smoker as a replacement to an identical one that finally rusted out. Don't know model number, but it's the vertically oriented tube with fire pit at bottom and water pan in the middle. The lid has a thermometer marked "Warm-Ideal-Hot". The old lid is still OK, and for whatever reason, sometimes I use the old lid, sometimes the new one. I'm getting ready to use it and I just noticed that the two thermometers differ widely. As a test, I removed them both and used aluminum foil to suspend them in the steam from a pot of boiling water. One of them barely came up to the "Ideal" and the other got almost into "Hot". Which one should I believe...assuming that the water steam should have been roughly 212 F? Many thanks Carl - Dallas TX...See MoreSmoker Disappointment!
Comments (16)Thank you, everyone. I've learned a lot from your comments already. This is a Masterbuilt charcoal smoker that looks like R2D2. The thermometer is in the lid, but after I saw it wasn't getting up to temp, I got out my digital thermometer, stuck it through the vent that was as closed as much as it would go. and into the one butt. The reader stayed on a side table I had there. Both thermometer read pretty much the same. The butts were 6 pounds each. I couldn't find my charcoal starter chimney so I got the charcoal started in the bottom (closed) right off the bat. I checked it through the side door and didn't put the butts in until the charcoal turned grey. I never opened the lid until I decided to take the butts out. I'd read where you should avoid opening the lid and door. It was quite windy out and just a touch cool. I live in south central Indiana at the very top of the tallest hill. I did wonder about that. I can't take it back because it was bought last summer and the receipt is nowhere to be found. I have a Brinkman charcoal smoker my late husband husband told me to go buy as my Christmas present several years ago since I wanted it, but it was never opened and I haven't been able to find where he stored it. I will not give up. I now have a small pork loin that will go into brine tomorrow to start the process for Annie's Canadian Bacon. Oh, and I had to buy another bag of charcoal today since I used most of the bag I had. Again, thank you each and every one of you. That's what I love about Gardenweb, the helpful people. Only ran into one or two over the years that were not very nice, but they pretty much are gone. Madonna...See Moredcarch7 d c f l a s h 7 @ y a h o o . c o m
