Wild blueberries - painstakingly delicious

It’s wild blueberry season in my part of Maine. They grow in untended fields everywhere. They are much shorter and smaller than highbush blueberries and therefore a pain to pick. They are also sweeter and more flavorful than their larger cousins. I do have some young highbush blueberries as well - but they don’t produce much yet.

There is a tool called a rake that can be used to pick them faster. However our fields are full of weeds so anytime saved is spent cleaning. Plus the berries get beat up. So I plop myself in the field and handpick. My best year I picked 35 pounds. This year I hope to get about half that.

As well as enjoying them fresh I love to freeze them. Using them for cake, pancakes pancakes, pie, sorbet or most commonly on my morning oatmeal.

Lucky you! This post made me think of the book 'Blueberries For Sal'

And Trader Joe's sells frozen wild blueberries, for those of us without access to fresh ones...

My part of Michigan grows blueberries also. In fact I live not far from a commercial blueberry farm. They put grocery store blueberries to shame. They are hard to pick, clean and freeze but so worth it. I have to make room in my freezer to lay the rimmed cookie sheets out for freezing. It's kind of funny not letting them roll away on me!

these are true hucklerries as i've had the pleasure of picking out the hard bony seeds from my teeth every time i eat huckleberry pancakes. the seeds are pernicious since they're smaller than kiwi but hard like.. well, like bones, and love to get caught in the center of the molars. usually only a toothpick gets them out. i'll look at the root system more carefully but from what i remember, they're not fibrous and soft. and if the best time to xplant is when they're dormant, i guess i'll have to wait until fall as they are starting to blossom now. would you know if planting in a planter until spring is best, or planting directly into the soil in the fall is best? i'm unsure (as you may be) exactly how much of the bush has to be xplanted for it to survive and thrive next year.

Well, I ended up making peach cherry buckle out of a nectarine plum recipe!! It was in an old issue of MS Living magazine that I've had sitting around for a few years. The reason I didn't go with blueberries is they were $3.99 at the store, looked like carp, and came from g-d knows where. The sign said CA and the box said, "packaged in NJ." ? The "eastern" peaches were .99 cents a pound because they were kind bruised and marginal, but ok for cake, and I had MI cherries frozen. We'll see how it tastes. It looks good. I hate the grocery store I went to, but my bank is there and I had to go so I got the stuff there to save time and money on gas. My dad won't eat blueberry stuff either, to "tart" for him, which blows my mind since that's exactly why I LIKE blueberries!! Thanks for that info Gina. I will be making that cake because sooner or later I've got to be able to find some good blueberries. I live on the edge of what was once the blueberry capital of the US--NJ and the Poconos. I guess now it's all subdivisions.

I buy strawberries in bulk from a local farm, it's not U-pick nor are their raspberries. Same with blueberries but ours are a little later with the local growers 1-2 hours away. The blue berry people tell us to freeze as is, not to wash, if possible not even repackage but just put the cardboard box directly into the freezer. I take them out as needed, they don't stick, don't become soft with thawing. I almost wish they didn't recommend freezing straight from the fields, washed measured berries on hand would save a little time on a busy day. Blackberries I pick myself, or some of them, DH really picks faster and climbs around better than I do - wild berries. Those I wash, bag and freeze, same day picked no matter what time we get home:) He reminds me he's picked more, I remind him I've still handled every single berry before they go into the freezer, not to mention cooking them into pies, desserts, and in a banner year, jelly.

Sorry to be late to the part, but it does look fantastic! I can't resist a bowl of that without some ice cream, so that definitely is an occasional treat. Another fav of mine is blueberry buckle, with this super simple recipe not needing any special pantry ingredients other than the blueberries (add lemon for a delicious variation or if vanilla prices have you in sticker shock). Easy to whip up if someone is dropping by for coffee.

We love them as well. They grow wild in our yard and all over the hiking trails in Newfoundland. Traveling home through NovaScotia, then Maine, in season, we pick up a few flats roadside for the freezer. So good. (open your border crossings Canada!) 😜

Some time ago, we traveled to Maine.

One day walking into the woods and we came upon a field of delicious looking blueberries. There was a big sign next to a locked box that said:

"Organic heirloom rare blueberries. Pick yourself. Eat as much as you can while picking. One bag $20. Please deposit into the box below. We trust the honor system Thank you"

The three of us each picked a bag full. As we walked further, we realized those were wild blueberries which were everywhere and belong to nobody.

Some wise A$$ put up that sign and the box and cheated us city slickers $60 bucks!

I miss wild blueberries. The ones you get at the store have no flavor in comparison. I grew up on 40 acres in western Mass covered with wild blueberries. One of the chores we 5 kids had to do was to pick the blueberries during blueberry season. Of course we ate our fill while picking. My dad said it was our job because we were shorter than adults and easier for us to pick the berries from the low growing bushes. With promises of blueberry muffins, pies, cobbler, pancakes and jam, we didn't mind.
