If they are true huckleberries, genus Gaylussacia, they will have hard, boney seeds, usually 10 per berry. If the seeds are very tiny like blueberries, then they are blueberries. Wild blueberries are often called huckleberries though, which leads to confusion. As far as transplanting, it probably does not matter which type they are, but what type of roots they have. If the roots are fibrous, they will probably transplant well. If they are stoloniferous (the plants grow up from long rhizomes called stolons), then they will be more difficult, as there may not be any fine roots nearby. I would suggest you dig carefully around a plant and see. The best time to transplant would be any time the plants are dormant.

these are true hucklerries as i've had the pleasure of picking out the hard bony seeds from my teeth every time i eat huckleberry pancakes. the seeds are pernicious since they're smaller than kiwi but hard like.. well, like bones, and love to get caught in the center of the molars. usually only a toothpick gets them out.
i'll look at the root system more carefully but from what i remember, they're not fibrous and soft. and if the best time to xplant is when they're dormant, i guess i'll have to wait until fall as they are starting to blossom now.

would you know if planting in a planter until spring is best, or planting directly into the soil in the fall is best? i'm unsure (as you may be) exactly how much of the bush has to be xplanted for it to survive and thrive next year.

I'm just guessing, but I would think in your climate, you would want them in the ground and not in a planter above ground were the roots may not survive the cold. Sounds like they are probably black huckleberries. The ones I have tried were not that great and the bony seeds were annoying.

One trick you could try is something that is sometimes done with suckers from other types of plants, like pawpaw, that grow up along rhizomes. You go out now with a shovel, and sever the rhizome on each side of a bush, while being careful to leave the soil undisturbed around the base of the plant, and let it grow some new roots over the summer. You could then transplant any that survive well this winter. If that does not work, then save some seeds.
