Comments (125)Bereniek: nother interesting article: "According to a report by the Christian Science Monitor, March 2006, staged homes sell for 7.4 percent more and twice as fast." Here is a link that might be useful: Home Staging Your Vacant House Actually that article is of no interest because the woman appears to be a stager of sorts. The CSM article may be promising. Hopefully I can view the article and determine the source data. I wish the first article didn't rely so heavily on home builders and marketers. They have an definite monetary interest in their provided data. I think what I need to search out is the raw, unbiased data of a marketer. But then I wonder if the marketer can be unbiased if they are trying to sell a marketing strategy? And, I wonder if it would be obtainable? It is a quandary. Thanks for some leads, Berniek. Comments (8)Thank you, Green Designs, but I do not want carpeting. Gregmills, thank you for the suggestion. As it turns out, the house next door is being renovated, and they are laying floors. Next week they are removing the carpeting, so I can see what the bare steps look like. The man doing the work said that even though the wood could look cheap, that the home stores like Lowe's, sell products that could cover or cap the steps. Since my entire house will have the vinyl tile, I had wanted to paint the steps, and put "rugs" up the center, covering most of the steps. This is the one project that I may turn over to a professional if I have any question whatsoever about safety. The last professional we hired had a worker (who was a felon) stole my diamond ring, so I have really been sold on "do it yourself" work. I would still like to hear from people who have done their own stairs - covering the wood, painting, tacking on 'rug' products and safety treads. Comments (21)ewininger90 The exception is for: Group U; Group R-3; and within dwelling units in Group R-2. It looks to me that a home fits within Group R-2. See pp, 3 and 4 here for definition of Occupancy Groups. If it were me, I'd get the absolute word in writing from your local municipality's building permit office. (You should be able to do that without giving out your address.) With that in hand, the contractor has no excuse should you need to go further. I don't know how effective the state consumer affairs office is. I can only speculate that they are more interested in outright fraud and non-performance rather than a Code violation. It would be instructive to see how the poster Caroline Hamilton, above, got satisfaction....See Moreksc36
