As long as there is a powder room for visitors, I see no issue with what I assume to be a jack & jill bathroom for the two bedrooms. Where will overnight guests sleep though?

Currently we have no other spare bedrooms. We will finish the basement later on and and bedrooms and a bathroom in the walkout basement

If at all possible try to avoid J&J bathrooms . Could you post your floor plan / IMO better to have the bathroom accessed from a hallway than to do J&J.

Many of us dislike Jack and Jill bathrooms because invariably, someone forgets to lock or unlock the other door. I'd always choose a bathroom with a hallway entrance.

If you have a half-bath available to guests, I like the idea of a J&J with access through (not threw) the two bedrooms. Thing is, most J&Js are poorly designed /overly complicated. Keep it simple.

Threw is the past tense of the verb throw. It's the word you use to say that something threw you for a loop or threw you off. Through is an adverb and a preposition. It's used to say that you entered on one side of something and exited on the other.

Our current home has 2 j&j baths. It seemed like the perfect set up when we bought it, as we have 2 daughters and 2 sons, all elementary school aged at the time we moved in.

Having survived their teenage years, I will never buy another home with a j&j bath again. Yelling and door pounding and stomping through each other's rooms because doors were "accidentally" left locked was part of the daily routine. And because I couldn't see when they were entering and exiting the bathrooms (like I would with hallway access) I couldn't tell who was taking too long and cutting into their sibling's time, or who hadn't even gotten up yet and was about to be late for school.

More trouble than they're worth, IMO.

We are retired and building a new home. We do not have a J &J bathroom, but did set up one upstairs guest bedroom/bathroom where access can be made should someone in the future finish out an attic space and make into a bedroom. Then they would have a J & J.

From experience being guest in other homes, we much prefer having a bathroom inside of the bedroom rather than having to go outside of the bedroom and into a hallway bath. That can get awkward when in the state of undress. :) So we purposely took the hall/bedroom bathroom and switched it with the bedroom closet. That allowed the bathroom to be private instead of having a door from the bedroom, and from the hallway, into the bathroom.

There is also another upstairs guest bedroom with it's own bath, but that bathroom is just inside of the bedroom door making it easily accessible from the study across the hall. So we have two guest bedrooms with their own baths, plus the option for two more bedrooms (one being the study, and the other currently unfinished) with access to bathrooms.

In addition to the M. bedroom and bath downstairs, we also have a full bath directly off of a front sitting room in our home, versus the bath being open to the foyer. It acts more as a powder room (1/2 bath for guest) because a shower is hidden. Since the powder room is not directly off of the foyer, it has more privacy during gatherings. Should the need be, that living space can also be turned into a bedroom and provides private access to a full bath. Thinking about guest that cannot do stairs, or a future live-in nurse, etc.

The above was probably more information than you need, M F, so to answer your question, I think your set-up works great! ;)

jkent9024dating because I just read jkent9024 comments. That's funny and something that I never thought of. Though the door banging would happen with teenagers trying to get in a hallway bath. My brother, sister and I had that one hallway bathroom arrangement growing up! What fun!!!

Jack & Jill bathrooms are perfect for developing sibling relationship that can last a lifetime. One kid can assist the other when they hear them "talking to Ralph on the big white phone". Learn anatomy when they walk through unintentionally unlocked door. Learn finished carpentry in repairing the door jam after having to kick in the door that was accidentally left locked. A jack & jill bathroom helps siblings learn how to resolve conflict, challenge memory, and enhances vocabulary. A catalyst of human development.

Not a fan of J&J baths for the reasons others mentioned.

We will unfortunately have one in our new build (production home) as the builder refused to change the framing to make it a hall bath. We only have one kid, so those 2 rooms will be her bedroom and play room/future hang out room. I don't love the sneaky access to her playroom that she'll have after bedtime but I think the door lock will be on the bedroom side, so I can lock her playroom door if I need to. I'm definitely not giving her the ensuite - it may be awkward for guests to use a hall bath, but it's even MORE awkward for guests to share a J&J.

If I had a choice, I would not put in a J&J.

I do agree with you there...if there are guest staying in both bedrooms. Hopefully they would be relatives that know each other well. A guest in one bedroom and a house member (perhaps a child or teen) in the other can be awkward for the guest. I believe if that were the case in my home, I would tell that child that they are to come to parents room for bathroom needs while the guest are staying in the home.

We have a humorous story about staying at my brothers home. There was a J & J bathroom between their college age daughters bedroom, and the guest bedroom. My husband was up early one morning using the toilet when in walks my niece from her bedroom. She takes one look at my husband and says "oh, hey Uncle V!" Turns around and leaves. :)

In the case of our new home, all guest will have their own bathroom. The J & J situation can happen with another family finishing off the attic space after we are no longer there.
