Bathrooms Design Dilemma Plumbing

Help with My Powder Room

Hi,
I've designed our bathrooms, and given the Covid factor, things have been okay. That was until, my husband had our vanity installed flush with our Powder Room wall. I knew nothing about the plumbing setup, so I didn't know how the vanity was going to be setup. It looks hideous!!

Here's the heartbreaker:

We have a floating faucet, so our plumbing has no flexibility. I thought we had room to center the vanity off the wall (not flush to the wall), but now my husband says it's too late.

I just finished the tiling last week, and I can't buy more, because it took 7 months to receive it from Italy (and the company isn't making any more).

I'm livid when I see the stupidity of this, especially after all of my hard work.

My husband says there's nothing wrong and it looks fine (and that I need to get over it and move on).

Our guests don't even have elbow room to wash their hands!?!? Is there anything I can do? Oh, and we are also out of budget. I swear if I could learn to plumb, I would do it all myself.

Help, I feel so defeated.

Breathe. it will be okay. I’m not a designer but maybe change out the mirror to one that doesn't hug the wall on the right so much. Maybe that will give the feel of more space.

I’m in the middle if a basement reno, and i opted for a smaller vanity because i noticed with the larger vanity that i had originally planned, the sink would have smooshed too close to the wall. i’m so nervous about getting plumbing lined up ok as well. and my designer ghosted me.

btw, im so intrigued by your black tile—it looks sharp!

Yes, once you change the mirror it might be more to your liking. If you can, move the electric from that wall. If you can't then try to hide it with a darker cover.

Dorry, boy I'm starting to sound like a stuck record around here, but have you looked at the Bathrooms thread in the Gallery? There are a few hundred gorgeous bathroom pictures in there to inspire us all. I'll bet you can find some colors you like. Then you might want to look in the color threads there to narrow down which precise brands and colors you like.

lyban: Thanks for the link. WOW!! What a beautiful kitchen!! I really need to purchase a Photoshop program that actually works with Vista and play with the different back splashes. Thanks for stoking the soapstone fire. caroleoh: I have to admit I have not done much as far as researching soapstone or other substitutes. I've liked it for so long and I didn't think of other alternatives. I'm such a novice when it comes to counter tops and I'll look into honed granite. I love that look. My neighbor has a green distressed island, which looks more like furniture and its exquisite. My DH on the other hand does not like that look. I normally just override these decisions but lately he's been right more than wrong. Thank you so much for your advice.

Margaritalady, I just repainted my 80's vanity black with rustoleum low-sheen paint. Thank you all so much!! This is so overwhelming and you all talked me off the ledge. @Jinx the color is called Pewter Green. Thanks for all the pics! I will try some tile with black. @Carrie B Thanks...seems I see it with the black a lot but we really wanted the brushed nickel. I love that advice also! @shirlpp I would need to find the dimensions but it's pretty small. I was thinking of wallpaper! I think I'll choose the tile first, then see about wall paper. @eld6161 Thanks, we've always loved green. Would be fun if it became popular. I will do that Google search.

Thanks Juliet. I think we've just been so exhausted since our slated demolition one year ago (the same time we lost our jobs of course! Lol!). It's been amazing too though, don't get me wrong, but it's good to get a calming reminder. I was thinking about a smaller vanity. This one is from Israel though, and it was delayed for many many months. The tiles are actually a steel grey, but they would look really cool as a grey-black! We may have to move the plumbing after inspections and move-in (that gives us time to figure out what options we have within the local code). We just don't want to slow down the momentum, so we can move in and trim down to one mortgage/rent. "Breathe" is the perfect advice, thank you. I hope your renovation is going well!

I think the suggestion to change the mirror is a good one.

Thanks @shirlpp. That outlet wasn't even supposed to be there! Just one of thousand glitches in a home build. Lol... we are trying to find out if it's a code requirement, we will minimize that no matter what!

Notice also in the photo that “all is forgiven” or all is deflected with some well placed accessories and hanging towels!

This is not uncommon in small, modern powder rooms and a new mirror will create a whole different feel and sink is certainly functional.

You are required to have an outlet, I would typically have put it in the same junction box with the light switch for a cleaner look and in a powder room they hardly get used. A black or charcoal outlet and plate will help.

Your sink is probably not code- it appears to be 24" wide which puts the drain 12" from the sidewall, code requires 15" from the sidewall. Had the sink been installed to code it would have ended up where you wanted it...

You know what? As others have said, get a new mirror and enjoy a great looking bath. You made it through 2020 and a renovation. Its great.

My only lingering concern- will the drawers clear the door casing?
