Dividing a cordyline?

I'd mentioned before that my cordyline seemed to die off over the winter, but now it's coming back. Here's where it is so far:

The new shoots appear to be coming from the roots, not the old stump. But I have 2 coming up, and I'm pretty sure that's not good! The taller one will just choke out the smaller one.

Can I safely divide them now? If so, any tips on the process?

im not sure your presumption is correct ...

why would two shoots from the same root mass ... interfere with each other ... so what if one is taller than the other... face the shorter one towards the sun.. and let it block the back one until it catches up ...

i suppose the place to start .. wouldl be to baqre root it.. and SEE if it can even be divided ... if not.. repot.. and put in shade until the roots start pumping...

if you can get root with each piece... divide it.. and dont look back ..

or cut one piece off.. and root it... and leave the other with the roots ...

Well, my logic is based on how it originally looked:

The pot also had asparagus fern and mandevilla.

If it has two of them coming up in the same pot, wouldn't they just crowd and choke one another out? I have no problem leaving it alone if that's how it should be, though.

If not, is this a plant that I can safely expose its roots without it going in to shock?

It just so happens that I have many, many plants to re-pot (who doesn't?) come spring. I also have to divide one of my Oncidium. That should keep me busy for awhile. Maybe I'll be able to hit a plant swap or two and get rid of some of my extras. I also have this large, shallow terracotta bowl that some one in my building tried to throw out. I've been trying to decide whether I want to fill it with black mondo grass or black clover.... maybe some ice plant? It has to be something full sun tolerant and preferable not an annual. Jonathan, good luck with the maidenhair! I brought my back from the dead myself. They are one of the few houseplant that absolutely will not adapt to low humidity levels. Very unforgiving of under-watering as well!

I agree with Joe - they'll never get so wide that you need to worry about having them close to the house. The one thing they will do is grow quite tall, but you don't have to worry about it for a few years. When they do, that's when you can cut them, and they should put out 2 or 3 branches from where you cut. I've done this with several older cordylines - and you should be able to re-root the cut top. Flowering will also force branching, but they don't do that for a few years, either.

I don't have any cuttings yet but I was in the Waterford Lakes area Lowes (East Orland) a couple of weeks ago and they had about 10 named varieties. I was very impressed! I got Kiwi, which is absolutely beautiful. Four stalks for $8. I divided them up and planted them and now I'm wishing I got more.

There was no frost at all in January in Portland and then February had below 20* temps. I am still seeing Trachycarpus and Phormium around town. Not noticing death or damage. Just drove past three taller than 10' windmill palms yesterday. They looked fine and were in an open location. I had a early blooming Rhodie suffer frost bite on all buds and new leaf tips are damaged too. I am worried about a couple hardy fuchsias planted in the fall and not properly mulched. The rest are showing growth from the roots. My newly planted (late summer) Hebe 'Red Tip's all made it with no protection. I was actually in Seattle on business when the Arctic Blast hit. I am not one who pushes the climate envelope so my experiences aren't that useful to those who do but I was just mentally commenting on Phormiums and Trachycarpus yesterday after seeing healthy ones. I grew up and learned to garden in a warmer climate so I enjoy growing the typical Northwest plants here. Whenever I've pushed the climate envelope Escallonia, some Hebes, Pittosporum, they have failed. Eventually we get a really cold winter.

This should look awesome! Like a shrub with multiple branches. But if you disagree, you don't need to disturb the roots, just cut off the one you want to move and stick it in soil elsewhere.
