SPRING!!!!

And hallelujah for it! I've so tired of snow I can't see straight. Anybody got any exciting gardening plans for this year? Gonna try anything new with your houseplants/tropicals?

I splurged the other day and ordered two pretty large trunked cabbage palms (Cordyline australis). I plan to put these in a couple large square pots i bought and underplant them with variegated Philos. Once the official warm weather hits I'm going to place these near the dining table on the shady part of my patio.

I also plan to try my luck (again) with a maidenhair ferns. I've tried these for three years now with no luck. But with my new little greenhouse, maybe the tides will change!

Neil, I started them inside under lights one time. They ended up the same size as the ones I wintersow, just about 4 feet. Last year I WSed them again (no space under my lights anyway) and had terrible results with only a few germinating so I used volunteers which also only got to 4 feet. I think to get the really big 6' plants like Emily's, you have to use lots of high-test ferts like she does. I've also read that they do best in slightly acidic soil, while mine is slightly alkaline, but I don't alter that. I try to keep things in my yard pretty organic whenever possible. I generally give them only a little organic food at planting time and that's it for the year. My poor results with WSing last year were a result of repeated attacks by Mother Nauture- first all blown away in a windstorm, then monsoon rains with no sun, later followed by drought. Later some were even knocked out by the guys building the new deck. But, new WSers, don't be discouraged by my negative results, because I had 4 very successful years prior to that. I used to do 18 hours, but I'm in Ontario too and have moved over to TOU. I am currently running 13 hours per day with no ill effects. Still getting vigorous growth. I am using T5H0's though which are more powerful then T12's. I would think 12 hours would probably be ok given sufficient brightness. You won't hurt the plants by testing it out. For peppers, the only side effect if it's not enough would be slower growth. You can rectify it easily if it doesn't work out. Since they aren't photoperiodic, you can split the photoperiods to avoid peak times. I am doing that now with no ill effect.

Thanks to all for the well wishes. The wedding was beautiful although the weather was not. They made the decision to bring the wedding inside at about 4:00 yesterday. The weather looked like rain and they didn't want to chance it. I will learn how to post pictures tonight or tomorrow. Really tired right now. Only one incident happened. Ha Everyone was leaving around 11:00 and the bride went over to the small building where she had dressed. She had a little too much to drink and thought she would lay down for a minute. In the mean time, my son was told that she had left to go to the bar where they were all going next. So he loaded his vehicle up with the unused beverages and the brides mother and I took the cake and some remaining food and we went to the hotel where we were staying. Well we learned this morning that when my son got to the bar, his lovely new bride wasn't there. Just then, his phone rang and it was the bartender and she said, "Well you got all the alcohol and food, but guess what, your bride is still here". There she was the last person there besides the bartender. Oh boy what a way to start a marriage. LOL

It just so happens that I have many, many plants to re-pot (who doesn't?) come spring. I also have to divide one of my Oncidium. That should keep me busy for awhile. Maybe I'll be able to hit a plant swap or two and get rid of some of my extras. I also have this large, shallow terracotta bowl that some one in my building tried to throw out. I've been trying to decide whether I want to fill it with black mondo grass or black clover.... maybe some ice plant? It has to be something full sun tolerant and preferable not an annual.

Jonathan, good luck with the maidenhair! I brought my back from the dead myself. They are one of the few houseplant that absolutely will not adapt to low humidity levels. Very unforgiving of under-watering as well!

I'm very much looking forward to spring. Way too much snow this year. I have a whole new garden to start, as I have moved into a new home. So many ideas, plant shopping, playing in the dirt...it's going to be great. All my perennials are sitting in pots in the garage, waiting to be planted outside. I'll be starting seeds inside in just a few weeks. I have a few houseplants to repot, but I have limited windows inside that are already full. I have to limit my buying somehow!

Yeah. Humidity was definitely my problem with the maidenhairs in my old place. Even with misting and pebble trays.

tsangel, I'm in the same boat, I really should limity my purchasing, but everytime I'm near a garden center I just get a little itch and into a "must have this" mode!

I bought climbing french green bean seeds yesterday and some lettuce seeds. I repotted a couple of hanging baskets of tradescantia. The snow has melted enough that I can open my back door again. Actually, several inches melted away yesterday but I think we might get a bit more tonight. I am certainly worried about the Easter Bunny this year.

Temps have been in the 50's consistently for a couple of weeks now and I've already started my spring plant regimen by potting some cuttings, repotting an old Peperomia Obtusifola - this time it actually moved into a hanging basket since the arms had drooped over and were nearly resting on the table. I've also decapitated one of my Crown of Thorns for propagation, and twice a day I'm checking on some passion flower seeds...I think it's been three weeks now and no sign of activity.

Looking forward to daylight savings - even though I hate to lose an hour, I love the light in the evening.

I've been too busy to start any plants indoors yet like I normally do. I'm going to order a couple of cold-hardy palms to add to the tropical bed, and relocate some plants to make room for more tropicals outside. I'm also trying to work on simplifying, for lower maintenance and for less watering since we seem to keep having droughts.

I need people like you to remind me of what I escaped from when I moved here (from Nebraska.) I moan and groan about the weather when we get threatened with the slight possibility of a little frost. Maybe tonight--went out and put the frost blankets back on--it'd been running in the low 70s for awhile. Quite a few of my 'houseplants' never come in--usually do fine under the frost blankets when it's threatening. Yard looks like Hallowe'en!
