What's For Dinner #289
Comments (100)Oh my, it's a good thing I had supper or I'd be wanting chili and chicken and Elery already wants Ann T's pizza and I really want Sharon CB's cafe cortado, and, well, I'm behind in posting I know..... Nancy, you're having a good time with that new camera, and the pictures are great. SharonCB, I could put the clothes out but they wouldn't thaw until about May, LOL. gbsim, Elery doesn't take pictures yet, but he reminds me to take them, so it's probably gonna happen. (grin) RR, better you than me at Chuckie Ch**se. I take The Princess and Bruvver there, they love it. Elery's just glad that here in Michigan they now serve beer and wine! Anyway, supper...... I tried a new recipe last week, chicken with lemon and artichokes. It was from CleanLiving magazine and it was pretty good, I was surprised because I was uncertain about the combination of chicken, onions, lemon and artichoke. With the chicken I had some oven roasted zucchini fries: I made a batch of the habanero thumbprints for the boss's birthday: Elery made a nice green salad with freshly baked garlic croutons: Sunday night I had an omelette with everything I could find in the fridge, including some leftover black beans, green pepper, a bit of asiago cheese, mushrooms and onions. I used my own eggs, my baby "girls" are giving me five eggs a day. They are still pretty small and usually frozen solid, LOL, but still, they're producing: On Saturday Elery and I made some basil pasta, he had given me the pasta attachment for the Kitchen Aid mixer and I've been fighting with it, but it's getting better: We had the pasta with some shavings of aged parmesan, collards from this summer's garden that I'd canned and some salmon burgers that Elery made with fresh salmon, minced and mixed with feta and spinach, then grilled and topped with a sour cream and salsa mixture: I found some organic apples at my small grocer for 69 cents a pound, product of the USA: and some blackberries for 99 cents a 6 oz. package. They were from Mexico but still pretty good: I made an apple and blackberry strudel and once again swore I'd never touch phyllo, what a PIA, and the strudel was ugly but it tasted good, although I was so frustrated by the time I was finished with it that I wanted to throw the whole mess in the trash: I did much better just topping the fresh berries with my homemade yogurt and a drizzle of honey: And so I think I'm caught up! Comments (45)During your visit, it would be fun to throw a big cooler in the car on Saturday morning and take a food shopping trip to Allentown. You could fill it up with enough goodies for the whole week. IÂd recommend this route: 1. StravinoÂs (no web site - 269 5th St, Whitehall 610-432-255) for Italian deli items and excellent bread and cold cuts. 2. Less than a mile from there is Soumaya Middle Eastern bakery (no web site - 264 Fullerton Ave., Whitehall 610-432-0405) for freshly baked pita bread (with zataar on Saturdays), baklava, hummus, baba, tabouli, etc. Their meat and poultry items like shawarma are only fair  itÂs a bakery and thatÂs their specialty. 3. The main street in front of Soumaya leads directly to the Elias Market (no web site - 101 W Tilghman St, Allentown 610-776-1030), a Middle Eastern/Hispanic market thatÂs treasure trove of ME spices, hard-to-find produce, Bulgarian feta, Greek yogurt and items you wonÂt find in most grocery stores. 4. Next door is the Elias Fish Market (no web site and doesnÂt open until 10 A.M.) with the freshest fish for miles around. Note: Most fish are only sold whole and the lower prices per pound reflect this. You can have them filleted but have to buy a whole fish. The striped bass/rockfish are great and will save you a trip to New Jersey. 5. Next stop would be the Allentown Fairgrounds Market (website if you Google it  17th & Chew St.), which is a typical PA indoor market with produce, butchers and poultry purveyors, bakeries and prepared foods. One spot not to miss is DanÂs in the center of the market for their chicken pies. 6. If youÂre ready for lunch, The Ritz BBQ (no web site) next to the market is a bastion of home cooking with the PA version of BBQ (ham BBQ platter pictured below), hot beef or turkey sandwiches with gravy, old-time milkshakes and malts, and excellent pies. 7. Another alternative also only a couple of blocks away for the best burgers in the valley is WertÂs Café (no website - 515 N 18th St, Allentown 610 439-0951). Their specialties are stuffed burgers, hand-cut fries and masses of thin onion rings. Those items are wonderful but itÂs better not to venture into the dinner menu. 8. On the way back, IÂd include a stop at Crystal Springs dairy store (no website - 3550 Bellview Road Schnecksville) to pick up dairy products from the herd behind the store and a container of their pepper cabbage. IMO, they also make the best shoofly and custard pies in the area. I have included a link to a trip report I wrote on another site that included some of these places. If you search those forums for "Poconos", youÂll also find some restaurants closer to where youÂre staying. Here is a link that might be useful: Lehigh Valley food shopping...See MoreAmerican Chop Suey?
Comments (36)Well I turned over the kitchen to my better half last night & let him make this for dinner. It was quite good but not exactly as he remembered it. Basically elbows in a really meaty red sauce. He sauteed garlic & onions, added in the ground beef (we were out of garlic powder- my spice cab really needs an inventory), a can of peeled tomatoes & a can of tomato paste. A smidge of salt. Topped it with shredded mozzarella that we mixed in to each bowl so it melted through. Bill is sure that his mother never used tomato soup and if there was cheese added it would have been pre-grated Kraft (no...just no). Chase- I said the exact same thing last night! That this must be what Hamburger Helper is...but why would you buy something like that when this was just as easy? Mind you we never had Hamburger Helper or even American Chop Suey by any of it's numerous names growing up. My mom only made Italian food ;-). We never even kept bottled sauce in the house. But last night's dinner was definitely comfort food, quick & easy & even met the 3 year old's seal of...well if not apprival then tolerance. He ate all of his dinner, anyway. I'm enjoying reading about everyone's memories and the different names & variations. I've been passing it all on to my better half. Nina...See MoreWhy should I buy from Trader Joe's?
Comments (86)I have never been in a TJ's that had several rows of frozen foods, and we have a few that aren't far from us. I don't think it's a big deal to access the crackers and cookies over the frozen foods. Unfortunately, I am able to easily grab the boxes of Jo-Jo's. ;) The parking lots are always small and awkward! I thought it was just around us because the stores are in urban locations, but I guess not? I think maybe we oversold the whole TJ's experience and you were disappointed, Oakley! I like it for certain things, but to me it's not the greatest store ever. I doubt that I'd go too far out of my way to shop there. Forgot to mention earlier that my kids used to love Nutrigrain bars, and TJ's has their own brand that are basically the same and so much cheaper. That's one of the items I've stocked up on there....See MoreIslay Corbel
