Am I the only one bothered by this ?

A few of the paperbacks I've purchased have a cover that feels "fuzzy" or "sticky" or "velvety".

Those are the only words I can think of to describe the feel ....and it really bothers me to have to hold the book.

I do not like the feel of it.

What is this cover material and why on earth do they do this with some books ?!

I haven't bought a paperback book in so long that I haven't encountered this, but it sounds yucky.

I've only noticed these 'sticky' covers on library books, especially on the plastic over-covers they put on them. It certainly is an unpleasant feeling while reading the book. A librarian friend told me they used occasionally to wipe the covers with white spirit. Let's hope they are using something stronger these days.

Well, I am still one of those without my personal e-mail addy listed on my member page, but can have e-mail sent to me through GW. In the past, I have had my addy listed and have had serious problems with spam mail that comes from other forums on GW. Since I post on quite a few of the other forums on GW, I found that some of them do have their fair share of spam type posts; advertising for various websites, products etc. When my e-mail addy was available for anyone to see, these posts would pop up on these other GW forums and within an hour or so I would have the spam coming to my e-mail box about the product, site etc. Once I realized where all this spam was coming from, I removed my addy from my member page, and that was the end of the spam coming from here. Hope you all understand why I no longer have my e-mail addy available to see, but as I said, you can send it through GW and I would say that 95% of the time I don't have a problem getting it. Fran

If you stop and think about it, it smacks of the mentality of another era. A century ago, children were the only form of social security aging parents had. If you lost an only child, and a spouse, you were in a dire situation. On top of that, great importance was put on perpetuating family lines and the lost of an only child who also happened to be male was probably considered an even more tragic event. I'm sure parents loved their children then as much as they do now, but children were also potential commodities. In my own parent's day, an orphan or abandoned child was often released to the care of distant kin, or just as often non-related adults to help out on farms, or in wealthy households. But yes, also like you are suggesting, it's a phrase used to render up a 'worse' tragedy than the death of a child who had siblings. And, it is insensitive to any parent of multiple children who has suffered losing one.

It seems that if you have two parents who are living together and fighting all of the time/not getting along, that is definitely detrimental for everyone involved- if there is eventually a divorce in the equation, and the custodial parent is unable to let go/angry/etc., and there is a new partner for the other parent whom the custodial parent resents, and the custodial parent is basically trying to turn the child against the other parent and the new partner, how on earth can anyone win in a situation like that? I've been on both sides- my ex and I absolutely couldn't get along, and there was constant bickering which the kids saw, and didn't need to see- there was a divorce, with one of my children wanting us to get back together, and that is totally understandable- kids want mom AND dad...together- but what children don't realize, and I've told this to my kids along with my stepdaughter (who is 9, and who lives with her mother- her mother is angry, bitter, and tells the daughter things such as I "stole" him from her, which isn't true--)is that mom and dad will ALWAYS be mom and dad, even if they don't live together- and that sometimes, both mom and dad can be better moms and dads if they DON'T live together- It shouldn't ever be about us as adults, in adult relationships- it should always be about the kids, and in a perfect world, both parents should be united on that front; realizing that it is about making the kids feel safe, feel secure, and realize that they are not losing either parent because of a divorce, when if both parents are together on it, it isn't that way- there are parents who live together where mom or dad has to go away on business a lot of the time, and isn't there that much as it is- the main thing is being involved in your child's life if you aren't the custodial parent- I think that maybe the new partner doesn't always feel that they 'don't want the child around, involved in their new life', although I will admit there are probably quite a few of them who feel that way- so much as it is that when a custodial parent is telling the child not to get along with the new partner, etc. because they themselves can't let go of the relationship, it makes it very hard on the new partner- letting the custodial parent and the child basically 'call the shots' about who sees who, when, and where isn't a good thing, especially if the custodial parent is angry and bitter about the breakup and would like nothing better than to cause problems and see the new relationship fall apart, and to use the child to help bring that about is definitely not right- the custodial parent needs to help the child/children feel secure with their relationship with the other parent, as well as the new partner- and the new partner needs to help the child feel secure as well- It really should be all about the kids.

Peke, Skeeter was adorable and loved to play fetch. He had silky hair on his head and tail but a little bit wavy and coarser on his body. I miss his kisses and how he understood my moods. He was deaf since I adopted him at 17.5 weeks and had seizures but he was so intelligent and loved me and his life. I miss him so much. Yes, dogs are so happy to see us when we come home and give us so much joy and love. That is wonderful your first Pekingese lived until 18. I hope my Sassy who seems to be healthy (Maltese like Skeeter) lives until 18. She turned 12 on 12-01-13 and still loves to go for walks and car rides but I can see she is slowing down. So sorry for your loss.

I have noticed the sticky substance on library book covers for some years. I wipe this off with a disinfectant spray which I prefer to the white spirit which Vee mentioned and I assume is methylated spirit? I use that for mirrors mainly. As the stickiness attracts dirt and fingermarks I like to both clean and disinfect!

I have got rather fussy about borrowed books since the pandemic and like to buy new ones or request a recent library addition.

In fact, since my operations for cataracts, I am reading fewer books and watching TV more as I don't now need spectacles to do that.

I know exactly what yoyo means. I just noticed this recently on new paperback books. I tried wiping the books with alcohol and cleaning solutions, to no avail. I am baffled and find it most annoying.

Somehow I have failed to notice this. I think I'll try to remain ignorant of it. There are enough annoyances in my life already. ;^)

Mystery solved !

Apparently there is a choice between glossy and matte finishes on a cover, whether it's a paperback or hardcover. The glossy supposedly shows scratches and shelf wear more easily. This from a bindery site.......I boldfaced their statement about the feel. I would say that 'pleasant tactile experience' is a judgement call....

MATTE LAMINATE

Matte Laminate is often described as a more professional and elegant finish. Matte is currently the more "fashionable" choice for laminate. It is currently very popular among Young Adult titles. Authors, designers and consumers are enamored with the look and feel of matte lamination. The velvety texture of the finish makes for a pleasant tactile experience. The matte soft cover finish is less reflective than gloss, giving a more natural look to cover art. A less shiny cover absorbs more small scratches and scuffs without looking "beat up". The simple contrast of a matte cover among many glossy covers may draw it's own attention on the bookstore shelf.

A few caveats regarding matte lamination: While many love the soft feel of matte lamination, the texture can be unusual and unexpected for some. The less reflective finish can lessen the intensity of cover color, producing a more "washed-out" or muted palette. Matte lamination can produce lower contrast on darker colors, resulting in an overall softer look. While scratches and scuffs are more readily absorbed by matte lamination, this finish can be more susceptible to stains and spills.

It has a definitely unpleasant feel to me......rubbery might be a way to describe it. I guess it's like the cilantro effect: Some people love it and some find it horrifyingly disgusting .

Am I the only one bothered by this ?
