Am I the only one who does not hybridize?
Comments (19)Been there and done that and it was a lot of work and expense and I only had 211 seedlings. On the upside there is no one more ruthless than me when it comes to judging seedlings. Bad foilage, gone. Won't open on cool mornings, gone. Melts in the heat, gone. Fades to an ugly color at night, gone. I am a firm believer that there are way too many daylilies out there that have nothing to offer as far as registering them goes and you have to wonder how the heck they got there in the first place. Our town has green recycling and that is the perfect place for plants that aren't an improvement on their parents. For everyone who feels that I am a monster for not loving "my babies" keep in mind that they are just plants and if they are recycled as compost they have served a better purpose than planting an inferior product. No more hybridizing for me!!!!!!! JoAnn...See Morewhy can't i choose a color - am i the only one??
Comments (15)Check the colors against your furniture and such. If you are starting with the walls first then I suggest you do like I did. After painting my 25"walls by myself, yeah really scary up there, I did the following: We purchased a rug that had all our favorite colors and put it in our family room as the anchor. I went to store and picked one of those pallet cards that gives a group of colors that go together. Mine are the Biltmore Estate colors. All my favorites are there with even a few I would never have thought of. And it turns out all the colors in the pallet are actually in the rug we got. It took a few months before we realized that there were colonial blue areas in the rug that actually matched the blue we used in one room. I used the neutral tan for my entry and stairwell, used a lighter version of the tan for my kitchen, family and hallways. I used the red in my livingroom, hunter green in dining and the blue in my upstairs bonus room. I just did my guest bath using the same blue in the rug andthe bonus room and it is actually my unexpected color in the house. It matches all the other colors but you would never really think to see it. But together they all match really well. I carry my colors in my purse and use them all the time when I am out and about and tempted to get something for the house. So pick that tan and find a pallet that goes with it, it really helped me a lot....See MoreAm I the only one that thinks...
Comments (78)Melinrk, there is a real difference between stating what you spent on your reno -- either from the whole thing or to each minute part of it -- and literally bragging about how much money you have to burn. Hardly anyone here engages in the latter but it has been known to happen every now and then. When it does, I find that kind of show of tell to be rather obnoxious. OTOH, unpretentious sharing of what you paid for your faucet, countertops, cabs, a GC, ID, etc. is very much part of the GW experience! Heck, that's totally valuable information which helps other members to figure out what they should be paying for the same or similar products and services. And, in fact, this is information that members consistently ask for. That is why I was disturbed when rmkitchen first posted to this thread with an unnecessary apology for having shared the cost of her reno. As I said earlier, I found her finished kitchen thread to be one of the best "give back" submissions on GW. FWIW I would put your thread into that same category. Thank you! BTW, I confess to being one of the guilty parties who failed to acknowledge your totally gorgeous kitchen when you posted and I now apologize for the public withhold of my admiration! You see, the longer I stay here (and it's been several years at this point), I find I no longer comment on every kitchen I see -- including many I consider to be fabulous! Sometimes it's just a matter of my schedule. I may have the time to look and appreciate the member's work but not enough to draft a meaningful statement of praise. (Often, I'll promise to come back and do so at a later point and somehow forget to do so. Or, when I finally get around to it, I've also arrived at the party so late that there really is nothing especially meaningful for me to to say -- no matter how hard I try.) Bottom line, if I don't comment on a particular kitchen it just shouldn't be assumed that the reason why is because I don't like the kitchen! Having seen this same subject discussed here many times, I know that goes not only for me, but also for many others of us. That said, let me be clear: I LOVE your kitchen AND your presentation of it, including your sharing of its associated costs. I'm sure that took a lot of your time as well as a desire to give back/pay forward to your fellow GW members. IMO, that was hardly bragging! :-) HTH...See MoreAm I the only one tripping over my dog?
Comments (58)Peke, Skeeter was adorable and loved to play fetch. He had silky hair on his head and tail but a little bit wavy and coarser on his body. I miss his kisses and how he understood my moods. He was deaf since I adopted him at 17.5 weeks and had seizures but he was so intelligent and loved me and his life. I miss him so much. Yes, dogs are so happy to see us when we come home and give us so much joy and love. That is wonderful your first Pekingese lived until 18. I hope my Sassy who seems to be healthy (Maltese like Skeeter) lives until 18. She turned 12 on 12-01-13 and still loves to go for walks and car rides but I can see she is slowing down. So sorry for your loss....See Moresheloveslayouts
