Question of the Day and other regular items (but I find that I'm not strongly attracted to, "I'll show you mine ...") - possibly partly because I'm on dial-up, too. I, too, am nosey and interested in a variety of subjects. I aso like to check topics of interest, and some where people are looking for ideas, advice, support, empathy, etc. I like to check what a number of my favourite people are talking about. I too find that a number of situations that I might have made a quick decision to reject turn out to be interesting, informative, to give me a good laugh, or some other things that make me click on some that I might be inclined to bypass, as I'm afraid that I may miss something interesting. I've felt that I have a tendency to be a thread killer, for I find that my post often seems to be the final one. I like to go back till I find subjects outlined in pink, indicating that I've looked at them before ... and no new posts since, to change them to blue. I also like to go back quite a few pages, on occasion. I sometimes feel that a topic there deserves a review. I thank many of you for your intelligence, concern for people and animals, plus people in other places, circumstances, etc., for the fun that you bring to the forum, and for sharing of yourselves here. And I appreciate that for many of you, we can have a disagreement at times without being disagreeable ... and often find that there are a number of aspects of a given situation where we do have quite a bit of agreement. Good wishes for one of the greatest New Years that you've ever seen! And some of us have seen quite a few. ole joyful P.S. Sometimes I make smart-ass comments, or play with peoples' names, etc. but it's meant in fun. If I have hurt anyone's feelings or angered them/you, I hope that you'll let me know, for I would like to get the issue straightened out ... I feel that we need to build relationships and understanding, not further alienation than there is in the world already. o j

So many people on GW are seniors, myself included, and it's just killing my eyes. The stark white and the font would be so much easier to see if it was darker like bold print. I can't use the forums like I used to because it just hurts my eyes so much. On my pc I can use add ons to alter it but unfortunately not available for the Android tablet browsers. If all the text in the posts were exactly like the houzz at the top right that would be a huge improvement. Dark and very bold.

People who need to know a particular tree wants to grow over 60 ft. tall where conditions permit are those wanting to plant the same kind where there is room for one about 15 ft. tall. Something that happens a lot, particularly when many appear to think "big tree" = 15 ft. The physical demonstration of genetic programming recorded by those measuring fully developed examples illustrates the inherent character of trees being considered. Doesn't matter if they don't all grow 100 ft. tall everywhere, when even half that would overwhelm the planting site. Or that it might take 50 years for them to get big. It costs thousands of dollars to hire a qualified tree service to remove one big tree in a developed setting, where it can't just be sawed through at the base and allowed to fall where it may. And left to rot. Why ever choose a tree for an inadequate space, when a smaller kind could have been planted instead? Denial that a particular kind does often loom large does not prevent this problem from developing down the road. Plants that burn - or worse - every time there is a sharp winter may not really qualify as landscape staples. Certainly not as the ironclad, fail-proof unchanging purchases probably nearly all non-hobbyists are visualizing at the time they bring landscape plants home and install them. Hence the value of pointing out specific items aren't, in fact totally hardy - as in never damaged by cold. This is why there are hardiness rating systems and hardiness categories like fully hardy, half hardy and so on - people want to know where each plant falls on the spectrum, what to expect.

Hello Mike, just been looking at the plant at the top and noticed the pot it’s in, maybe when repotting time approaches it would be best suited to a wider, shallow style of container, half pots we call them here? That will give it more stability as the base of that white one is so very narrow and it’s a tall pot isn’t it, all very unstable. Would hate it to get smashed about again. I had a case of a falling down TC also....one that I rescued from mums house when she moved into the Home, placed it in a hanging basket, just sat the pot inside it, chain snapped and whole lot crashed to the floor. The plant was smashed to bits, one half completely gone off a full circle plant of about 2ft diameter. I was so sad.....but each and every severed piece rooted again, I now have two plants......and new chains! The mother plant is in the process of regenerating all it’s lost limbs from low down on the smashed main trunk, it will soon have filled in the lost half of the circle. Buds forming on both plants as I write, so all was not lost of my Special plant :-) Gill
